España-EEUU: hay que recuperar esta relación

Aunque el foco se ha puesto en las medidas económicas internas y en la atención que el Gobierno de Rajoy va a prestar a los asuntos europeos, me parece más importante señalar que hay indicios de que el nuevo gobierno parece decidido a recuperar la relación con EEUU.

Uno de los indicios, el más obvio aunque acaso no el más importante, ha sido la aprobación de las medidas para luchar contra la vulneración de los derechos de autor, aprobando la conocida como 'Ley Sinde' (RD 1889/2011) y la supresión del canon digital (RDL 20/2011-Disp.Ad.10ª), objetivo principal de la estrategia económica useña, como los wikileaks revelaron hace tiempo y es, por demás, muy lógico, al ser los useños propietarios de la gran mayoría de los productos que nos descargamos por la cara (ver SOPA).

Aunque menos destacado que lo de la 'Ley Sinde', lo del canon es más importante, y jurídicamente más coherente y respetuoso, que los americanos serán matones pero, al menos, siempre buscan guardar las apariencias dotándose de un marco legal pasable: por el canon pagábamos el derecho a bajarnos cosas, nos las bajáramos o no, así que suprimirlo era el primer paso para acusarnos, con algo más de 'razón', de ladrones si después de la supresión lo seguimos haciendo.

Sin lugar a duda, el principal beneficiario de esta medida es EEUU, aunque otros de casa puedan recibir algunas migajas y, claro, estén muy contentos (¿acaso hay alguien que pierde el tiempo bajándose una canción de Miguel Bosé?, ¿alguien quiere descargarse un libro-e de Almudena Grandes?). De ahí la insistencia de los americanos. Y de ahí, la voluntad rajoina de complacerles.

La recepción que el gobierno useño ha dado al gobierno del PP me hace pensar que los de Rajoy tienen más ideas en la cartera para intentar acercarse a la aún gran potencia. Al menos espero que así sea.

El ZP y los suyos han asolado muchas cosas, algunas realmente importantísimas (empezando por la principalísima unión de los españoles), pero no me cabe la menor duda de que el mayor daño infligido ha sido a la relación de España con EEUU: y no solo por lo de Iraq sino, sobre todo, por lo de la bandera... y por la constatación de que lo pactado con un gobierno puede ser graciosa e innecesariamente obviado por el capricho del siguiente.

Realmente no creo que la relación pueda devolverse al punto al que, por primera vez en la historia, la había llevado Aznar. Eso no se logrará, si alguna vez se logra, ni siquiera en muchas generaciones, pero sí espero que vuelva a mejorar sustancialmente.

El cambio estratégico en la relación España-EEUU que brillantemente ingenió Aznar obligó a nuestros amigos franceses a diseñar el 11-M. Lo que hizo ZP permitió al rey de Marruecos atreverse a colaborar, muy gustosamente, en el plan de los gabachos, sus habituales protecto-colaboradores. Unos y otros sabían que España no contaría con la aquiescencia que los americanos le dieron cuando lo del perejil.

Aunque cueste tiempo y esfuerzo, bien empleados estarán los que se dediquen a recuperar la relación.

Ley concursal: hasta en esto eran malos los de ZP

El art. 91.6º de la Ley concursal (Ley 22/2003) declaraba generalmente privilegiados "[l]os créditos de que fuera titular el acreedor que hubiere solicitado la declaración de concurso y que no tuvieren el carácter de subordinados, hasta la cuarta parte de su importe."

Vamos que quien se daba prisa y actuaba tendría una pequeña ventaja y compensación, hasta "una cuarta parte".

Con el ánimo de reforzar esta posición, entre otras cosas, nuestro excelso parlamento, a iniciativa de los de ZP, aprueba la Ley 38/2011, que reforma el precepto transcrito, duplicando esa "cuarta parte" hasta "la mitad"... aunque, ¡ay mamita!, entre el 12 de octubre y el 31 de diciembre de 2011, la han dejado en "nada".

¿Cómo es así?

La Ley 38/2011 modifica varios apartados del art. 91, no solo el 6º. De hecho al antiguo apartado 6º, citado, lo renumera como 7º, e introduce un nuevo apartado (para privilegiar el "dinero fresco") al que numera como 6º. Es decir, modifica el 6º antiguo, al que además ahora llama 7º, y mete un 6º nuevo.

Pero la misma Ley 38/2011 establece que, en general, la reforma no entrará en vigor hasta el 1 de enero de 2012... salvo unos poquitos apartados que entraron en vigor inmediatamente, el 12 de octubre de 2011, día siguiente a su publicación: entre estos, el apartado 6º nuevo.

Consecuencia, en la ley en vigor desde el 12 de octubre, y hasta el 31 de diciembre, de 2011 ha desaparecido el antiguo apartado 6º del artículo 91 ("cuarta parte") y aún no ha aparecido el nuevo apartado 7º ("la mitad")... así que nos quedamos con "nada".

Mal asunto para los acreedores que insten el concurso entre dichas fechas.

Lo más grande es que no he leído nada que destaque este hecho... del que yo tampoco me había percatado.

Otra vez: Francia y el 11-M

Basta entrar aquí para ver que desde hace años sostengo la participación principal de Francia y su acólito Marruecos en los atentados del 11-M.

Hace un par de días los del SUP (Sindicato Unificado de Policía) se acercan, aunque invierten el orden de los factores (que en esto caso tienen importancia) y no se atreven a sacar todas las consecuencias de lo que dicen, limitándose a manifestar que la participación de esos dos estados fue no informar sobre lo que iba a ocurrir, sabiéndolo:

El portavoz del SUP también ha hablado de la "hipótesis sin pruebas" que mantienen desde el sindicato. Apuntan que el origen de lo ocurrido podría estar en el conflicto de Perejil. Su consecuencia, ha continuado, podría haber sido "una venganza de los servicios secretos marroquíes", que conocían lo que iba a pasar "y no dijeron nada". Ha apuntado también a los servicios secretos franceses, que "tampoco estaban muy contentos con la política de Aznar". "Me parece que ahí hay algún conglomerado que debe investigarse, hay que investigar en esta línea", ha dicho. Para Benito, "hay que tomarse esto en serio, porque estamos hablando de muchas vidas humanas" y de "culpables fuera de la cárcel", "no hay que parar".

Yo creo que su participación fue mucho más principal, como ya he repetido hasta la saciedad, por más que no tengo prueba alguna o que el SUP no pueda decirlo en público. Pero algo es algo.

Lo lógico, al menos lo que a mí me parece lógico, es que la autora del atentado fuera Francia con la ayuda instrumental e interesada de Marruecos. Así me lo pareció desde los primeros días y así lo sigo pensando. Al final de este post, de primeros de 2006, ya lo apunté y en este sigo poco después, y luego en mucho más... e incluso lo escribí antes, aunque ahora no lo encuentro.

Escarnio: IBI de Madrid

Llevo casi 30 años ejerciendo como abogado en Madrid... y no he entendido nada.

Acabamos de recibir notificación sobre las valoraciones de nuestra casa tenidas en cuenta para determinar el importe del IBI de este año.

En la notificación nos avisan de que si no estamos de acuerdo con el cálculo podemos recurrir ante un tribunal administrativo de nombre rimbombante (en realidad, y a pesar de los avances informáticos, tampoco se toman la molestia de especificar el tribunal que te correspondería en concreto, y te ofrecen una alternativa que tú mismo tienes que elucidar).

Por experiencia sé que el tribunal de referencia:

se toma años para resolver;
casi siempre resuelve a favor de la administración, de la que depende;
sus resoluciones son arcanos, llenos de frases hechas y remisiones a normativas no aptas para las entendederas de casi nadie, ni las de quienes las redactaron;
lo que deciden puede no ser final, y cuando ellos terminan puede empezar el calvario judicial, en jurisdicción especializada y con normas tan peculiarmente desequilibradas a favor de la administración como uno se puede imaginar -por supuesto, este nuevo juzgador también se toma su tiempo y sus resoluciones pueden ser recurribles; y
aun si uno se atreve con todo eso y acaba ganando (¡uf, qué tío/tía!), cobrar de la administración lo debido puede llevarte otros años y más papeleo, aún más en los tiempos que corren;
¡ah! se me olvidó decir que desde el principio la administración había ejecutado su acto y ya te había cobrado, y, por tanto, cuando digo cobrar me refiero a recuperar solo aquello que ya te habían quitado, sin incluir los gastos que esos papeleos y pleitos te han provocado, pues que la condena en costas a la administración es ultra rara avis (la indemnización por el cabreo y mal rato provocado ni entra en los cálculos más optimistas).

Aún así, digamos que eres de esos peleones que, harto de que los abusones de turno (sí, las administraciones públicas y las empresas de servicios básicos, como telefonía, energía y por ahí, muy principalmente) te confundan con recibos incomprensibles y tramposos y, con cada uno y casi siempre, 'se confundan', siempre a su favor, qué casualidad, y aprovechen para quitarte unos euros indebidamente, quedándose tan anchos, digo, aún si eres una peleona de esas harta de abusos, tu primer himalaya será estudiar ese recibo por el que este año te van a cobrar casi el doble que hace un par de años, o ni se sabe cuánto más que hace no tanto, y eso a cambio de menos cosas.

Y ahí es donde quería llegar: ¿de verdad alguien, con un mínimo de decencia, puede sostener que una persona ordinaria, incluso jurista, puede entender el contenido de la notificación sobre las valoraciones relativas al IBI que nos hace el Ayuntamiento de Madrid? ¿alguien puede sostener que la susodicha notificación contiene la información completa y necesaria para que se pueda calcular si la valoración hecha es correcta en tu caso concreto?

En nuestro caso, la notificación incluso nos cuenta la valoración del garaje... cuando en casa no hay garaje. También nos valoran unos 'Otros', que no sabemos a qué se refieren, en concreto. Y nos parece que valoran lo mismo un metro de garaje que uno de vivienda u uno de esos Otros, sea por valor del suelo o de construcción. Y nos hablan de 126 metros, cuando apenas tenemos noventa y pocos, y eso que los años nos han hecho saber que hay diferencia entre metros útiles y construidos.

Desde luego la notificación contiene mil siglas, que no se corresponden del todo con las que aparecen en la hoja de 'explicaciones'

El asunto es un escarnio. Yo preferiría un pistolero que viniera a pedirme esa cantidad sin pretender justificarse tanto, al menos me quedaría la esperanza de luchar por cambiar la ley y hacer que las cosas fueran de otra manera.

Pero no. Como además de ladrones tienen que sentirse bien, nos empachan con leyes abarrotadas de principios y derechos grandilocuentes, que para algo están los reglamentos y, si no bastan, la burla ejecutiva.

¡Vaya banda!

Excusa no pedida: no digo yo que no hayamos de pagar por los servicios municipales que recibimos, incluso por los que no recibimos pero reciben otros en peores circunstancias que nosotros; tampoco digo que lo que pago sea mucho ni poco, ni más o menos de lo debido. Lo que digo es que no hay derecho a que se mofen de nosotros, y menos amparándose en la ley. También digo que no hay peor crimen que el robo de la esperanza. Si en mi mano estuviera les hincaría una lanza ardiente donde es debido, hasta llegar a la glotis, sin la menor compasión.

Lo accesorio frente a lo esencial

Para España, el terrorismo etarra es un problema relativamente costoso pero menor y accesorio.

Sin embargo, la descohesión, alentada primero desde el independestismo y luego desde los localismos (siempre con la inestimable ayuda de nuestros amigos del otro lado de los Pirinéos), es un problema esencial.

A las labores de descohesión han contribuido, con alegría y desparpajo dignos de mejor propósito, otros factores importantes, claro, que las luchas por la preponderancia político-mediática no salen gratis... pero de eso hablaremos otro día.

Poco podremos los españoles hacer si no nos olvidamos de las distracciones de lo accesorio y no nos esforzamos por centrar nuestra atención en lo importante: recuperar la sensación de unidad en el propósito de ser más altos, más fuertes y más rápidos.

Si no entendemos que la suma de muchos pequeños esfuerzos, unidos en un objetivo común, es mucho más eficaz que cualquier fuerza salvadora, por ideológicamente amena que la misma sea, España no prosperará y los españoles nos veremos abocados a la depresión y los lamentos baldíos durante muchos años más.

Ojalá el oportunismo etarra-izquierdoso no nos obnubile las entendederas. Amén.

ETA, Francia y España

Cuando uno alcanza su objetivo tras años de lucha tiende a adoptar maneras condescendientes con los rivales derrotados.

Tras dominar el panorama político legal con el control de numerosas instituciones oficiales, ETA anuncia que cesa definitivamente en su lucha armada.

Al margen de los muchos análisis que la situación está provocando, la repercusión está siendo muy diferente en España y Francia, a pesar de que ambos países son emplazados por ETA a sentarse en una negociación para resolver las consecuencias del conflicto.

Pero mientras en España la noticia domina todos los medios de comunicación en Francia merece solo el nivel de cuarta o quinta noticia: Le Monde ni siquiera menciona el emplazamiento a negociar que los etarras hacen a Francia.

Francia, siempre Francia, ha sido y es el agente exterior con más intereses y más involucrado en las cosas del devenir de España. Lo que me asombra es que últimamente, ya desde hace muchos años, los dirigentes españoles no manifiestan públicamente la menor percepción de tal circunstancia ni muestran acciones para abordarla.

Dos dichos tan repetidos como desacertados

Uno viene de muy antiguo y dice que el saber no ocupa lugar. Por mas que se repita, cualquiera sabe que es mas falso que un duro de plomo. No es cierto ni materialmente, que todos sabemos lo rápido que los libros colonizan la casa y amenazan echarnos para quedarse con todo el espacio. Tampoco lo es en el mundo digital: ¿acaso no sabéis que los grandes centros de datos, las casas que hoy guardan el saber, son de los principales consumidores de energía? Y mucho menos lo es intelectualmente, como todos compobamos día a día al constatar nuestra pantagruélica ignorancia y el esfuerzo mayúsculo que exige aminorarla en una minúscula porción.

El otro aforismo falso de toda falsedad es moderno, aunque ya tiene un tiempo, y es ese que pretende convencernos de que el mundo es cada vez mas pequeño. Lo empezaron diciendo por eso de que los medios de transporte permitían viajar mas rápido. Siguió por aquello de que el mayor conocimiento de lenguas facilitaba el contacto entre gentes hasta entonces ignotas unas de otras. En su versión mas actual se centra en el prodigio de internet y, aun mas recientemente, en el auge de las nuevas redes sociales, que tanto nos acercan unos a otros (¡ay, candidez bendita!... ¿o es maldita?).

Es verdad que, como se oía en mi juventud, el mundo corre que es una barbaridad. Pero mas cierto aun es que el ser humano tiene grandísimas limitaciones.

Habiendo tenido la oportunidad de viajar desde pequeño y siendo un adicto enfermizo a internet, me da la sensación de que (1) los viajes rápidos, que son la absoluta mayoría, apenas nos acercan a los demás ni a lo desconocido, y cada vez menos con la uniformización rampante hasta de los lugares mas exóticos, que cualquiera que haya viajado un poco puede certificar, y (2) la comunicación digital apenas ha incrementado nuestra capacidad de atención, relación y, mas aun, de aprendizaje (recordemos la primera falsedad y cómo el saber exige un tremendo (homenaje a los cubanos) esfuerzo, para el que no estamos preparados, hoy menos que nunca).

El problema español

Me encantaría compartir la opinión de quienes piensan que las cosas de España se empezarán a resolver con la salida de Zapatero, o del PSOE, del poder.

No lo creo en absoluto.

Es cierto que pocos presidentes en la historia de España pueden haber dañado a España tanto en menos tiempo.

Incluso puede sostenerse que las alianzas con los independentistas, endémicas en el PSOE, y su marcadísima tendencia hacia posiciones comunistas 'peculiaris' (peculiares por la tensión en que conviven con sus tendencias hedonísticas) y al cainisno, que tanto necesitan y tan útil les resulta, han hecho gran daño a España.

Puede incluso sostenerse que la culpa no es solo achacable a esos, sino a otros muchos actores y partidos.

Pero el problema español hoy no son ellos, no solo ellos. El problema es que su 'ideología' ha impregnado hasta los tuétanos de muchísimos españoles. Millones.

Y esto tardará generaciones en cambiar. Y para que ocurra será necesario cruzar no pocos ríos bravísimos de problemas graves.

Acaso la horrorosa crisis que vivimos nos permita empezar el primer vadeo, pues desde luego nos va a obligar a unirnos para no ahogarnos, que a la fuerza ahorcan.

Carta de un español a los Reyes Magos

Hace un par de días logré soltar, por haberlo terminado, el atrayente y tenso libro que me había embebecido.

Escrito por un valiente, lúcido y culto extranjero para elucubrar sobre su país, lo leí con un año de retraso sobre su publicación en 2009.

Aunque las circunstancias que separan su país de España no son escasas, el fondo del fondo de lo que plantea es perfectamente aplicable a nuestro país.

Yo no me resisto a parafrasearlo:

Ya no vale seguir haciendo el avestruz para evitar las cuestiones dolorosas...

Los españoles debemos preguntarnos qué queremos que haga de España algo único, diferente de otros países a los que admiramos. Debemos aprender a admitir lo que no nos gusta de nuestro propio país, sin rendirnos no obstante.

Es hora de reinventar el españolismo, recrear el debate acerca de por qué los españoles necesitamos una España y preguntarnos qué estamos dispuestos a hacer para preservarla.

No hay nada más ambicioso. Ni nada más bastará.

Blanqueo de Jamás

El 27 de septiembre, Mai Yaghi (AFP) empieza o sigue con el blanqueo del Jamás, desde "Gaza, Territorios palestinos", dice.

Un blanqueo que suena a chiste, claro, al recordar los dos minutos que tardó el Jamás en quitarse de en medio a los del Fatah de la OLP y la ANP.

Además, solo un día antes, según noticia de Europa Press, el brazo armado del Jamás, las Brigadas Ezzedin al Qassam, instó a Israel a abandonar los territorios palestinos y lanzó una advertencia:

"Somos más fuertes que antes".

O el tal Mai es cómplice o bobo (o boba), pues señala que el Jamás 'mantiene una tregua de hecho' y dice que el Jamás es 'nacionalista e islamista', como si ambas características no fueran radicalmente antitéticas.

Debería leer la reciente encuesta publicada por Near East Consulting, de la que dió noticia Daniel Pipes, en la que a una muestra aleatoria de 900 palestinos mayores de 18 años de Jerusalén Este, Cisjordania y Caza se les preguntó cómo se identificaban a sí mismos:

61% "ante todo como musulmanes"
20% "ante todo como palestinos"
15% "ante todo como seres humanos"
3% "ante todo como árabes."

Pero veamos lo que dice y lo que vocean, nada nuevo, por cierto, los personajes a quienes cita, pues será bueno tenerlo en cuenta en el futuro:

"Un puñado de grupúsculos palestinos islamistas. acusan [al Jamás] de falta de firmeza ante el Estado israelí y de haber abandonado sus principios religiosos.

(...) Estos grupúsculos... "salafistas"... son de tendencia Al Qaeda. Según Abu al Bara al Masri, que se presenta como uno de sus jefes, estos grupos "yihadistas salafistas" son actualmente cinco en el territorio (Jund Ansar Ala, Jaich al-Islam, Tawhid wa Jihad, Jaich al Umma y Ansar al Sunna) y cuentan con varios centenares de miembros.

Abu Hamza al Maqdisi, un dirigente de Ansar al Sunna...: "No tenemos intenciones de declarar apóstata al Hamas (...) pero pensamos que la aplicación de la sharia es necesaria", insiste, reclamando por ejemplo la obligación del velo integral para las mujeres, la prohibición del tabaco y la edificación de un emirato islámico.

(...) La tensión alcanzó su paroxismo en agosto de 2009, cuando el Jund Ansar Alá proclamo un "emirato" islámico en una mezquita de Rafah (sur). Las fuerzas armadas de Hamás invadieron entonces la mezquita y reprimieron sangrientamente a los fundamentalistas dejando 24 muertos.

"Desde entonces, hemos sido procesados, detenidos; nuestras familias han sido amenazadas para convencernos de que nos rindamos", denuncia Abu al Masri. "Ellos detienen a los muyahidín (combatientes islámicos) y los torturan. No torturan tanto a los colaboradores de Israel como a los combatientes que disparan cohetes" contra el Estado israelí, acusa.

Un portavoz de Hamas, Taher al Nunu... : "nosotros respetamos a todos aquellos que trabajan conforme a la ley y los acuerdos palestinos".

"Apoyamos a nuestros hermanos de la organización dirigida por el jeque Osama bin Laden", se contenta con responder Abu al Masri. Abu al Maqdisi reconoce algunos contactos informales: "ha habido contactos entre individuos de algunas organizaciones, pero eso no quiere decir que nuestras actitudes sean las mismas, o que coordinemos nuestra acción militar o nuestro financiamiento".

Los alauitas sirios llevan demasiado tiempo practicando el bizantinismo en la política de Oriente Medio como para dejarse arrastrar por los iraníes.

Ellos lo tienen claro: apoyar la pelea vicaria de otros, sean guerrilleros del Jizbolá o de Jamás u otros, pues muy bien. Pero volver a la guerra abierta con Israel, y encima ¡en defensa de Irán!... ¿está usted loco?

Al menos esa es la situación que refleja un cable wikileado de la embajada useña en Damasco del 22 de oct de 2009 (el Jpost dice, por error, que es del día 20).

No obstante, de ese cable lo que a mí me ha interesado más, frente a lo destacado por otros (además del Jpost citado, Michael J. Totten destaca "The resistance bloc's weak point), ha sido el siguiente pasaje:

“We expect to wake up one morning soon and learn the Israeli strike took place. Then we expect an Iranian response. At that point, we, Turkey, and Qatar will spring into action to begin moderating a ceasefire and then a longer-term solution involving both countries’ nuclear programs. That’s the best scenario. All the others are bad for us and the region,..."

Una vez más se aprecia la complejidad diplomática del Oriente Medio... y como todos buscan siempre su objetivo. Además, resulta claro que, según los sirios, los americanos verían con buenos ojos una solución "involving both countries’ nuclear programs." Y los sirios vienen hablando mucho últimamente con los americanos.

¶1. (S/NF) The successive visits of three high-level Iranian officials to Damascus in early December appear at first glance to reaffirm strong Iranian-Syrian security ties and other forms of bilateral cooperation, but they may, in fact, mask deepening rifts over Iraq, Yemen, and the possibility of war with Israel. Syrian observers suggest the a shifting balance of power between Iran and Syria. The Iranian government, challenged domestically by anti-regime protests and abroad by building pressure over its nuclear program, has sought Syria’s help just when Syria has begun to enjoy other strategic options, such as its relations with Turkey and Saudi Arabia. Asad’s government proved willing to host the visits, sign a defense MOU, and allow Hamas Politburo Chief Khaled Meshaal to visit Tehran, all the while continuing close cooperation with Iranian security services and Hizballah operatives. But Asad reportedly resisted Iranian arguments for closer bilateral coordination in Iraq and Yemen and flatly rejected being drawn into a war between Iran and Israel. End Summary.

Reaffirmation of Staunch Syrian-Iran Ties

¶2. (C) On the surface, the early-December visits of three Iranian officials -- National Security Advisor Saeed Jalili on December 3, Vice President and head of the Environmental Department Mahammed-Javad Mahamadzideh on December 5-6, and Minister of Defense Ahmad Ali Vahidi on December 8-11 -- represented a concerted reaffirmation by both countries of their strong security ties and their commitment to expanded relations. Set against a backdrop of rising international pressure on Iran over its nuclear program and an exchange of threats between Israel and Iran, the visits signaled continuing cooperation in confronting Israeli policies. Asad publicly praised Iran’s support for resistance against Israeli occupation after his December 3 meeting with Jalili. According to the Syrian press, Jalili also met with Palestinian leaders based in Syria, including Hamas Politburo Chief Khaled Meshaal, whom he invited to visit Tehran the following week. Though less focused on security issues, the visit of VP Mahammadzideh affirmed both countries’ commitment to expanding economic cooperation and working together on responding to climate change. On December 11, Vahidi and his Syrian counterpart, Ali Habib, expressed a desire for a deepening of defense and military ties, formalized in a memorandum of understanding calling for “efforts aimed at the establishment of a comprehensive regional security pact,” and establishing recurrent meetings of the Joint Defense Cooperation Committee.
¶3. (S/NF) The public showcasing of these three visits contrasted with the secrecy with which Iranian Revolutionary Guard Commander/al-Quds Force Ghassem Soleimani conducted his. Reportedly accompanying Jalili, Soleimani returned to Damascus after a long absence, perhaps a reflection of lingering tensions between Iran and Syria that erupted after the February 2008 assassination of Hizballah military strategist Imad Mugniyah in the Syrian capital.  XXXXXXXXXXXX spoke very reluctantly about Soleimani’s presence in Damascus, saying only that “he was here,” and “when he visits, it’s usually significant.” XXXXXXXXXXXX reported seeing Jalili and Soleimani at a XXXXXXXXXXXX meeting with Syrian officials that included FM Muallim, as well as unspecified members of Hizballah. “Soleimani represents the business end of the resistance,” commented XXXXXXXXXXXX, also reluctant to discuss the sensitive issue of Iranian-Syrian-Hizballah military cooperation.
¶4. (S/NF) Taken collectively, the Iranian visits over eight days were meant to dispel doubts that Syria would or could abandon its ties to Iran, according to XXXXXXXXXXXX The visits allowed the Syrian government to project an image of strength at a time when Israel was rejecting Syria’s demand for a commitment to withdraw to the June 4 lines and a return to Turkish-facilitated proximity talks prior to moving to direct peace negotiations. In a joint press conference with Jalili, FM Muallim supported Iran’s right to enrich uranium and to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes. Moreover, the Iranian visits coincided with the introduction of a law in the Knesset to require a national referendum on any peace treaty. “Iran provides us diplomatic cover as well as the military might to back up our demands for peace,” argued XXXXXXXXXXXX. “In return, we’re providing Iran support when the West is pressuring Iran on its nuclear program,” he said.

But Did Iran Wear Out Its Welcome?

¶5. (S/NF) Whatever Syrian rationale there may be for showcasing military ties to Iran, many Syrian observers are emphasizing the shifting balance of power in their bilateral relationship. According to XXXXXXXXXXXX Iran, not Syria, sought the visits as a sign of Syrian reassurance. “Be assured,” commented XXXXXXXXXXXX “they needed these visits far more than we did.” Summing up a view heard repeatedly around Damascus, “things in our relations with Iran are starting to return to normal” after a long period of Syrian dependence, XXXXXXXXXXXX asserted. He added, “U.S. isolation and the invasion of Iraq made it necessary to adopt such extreme measures. But now, things are moving back to equilibrium.”
¶6. (S/NF) By the time of Vahidi’s visit, some Syrian officials were quietly grousing that the Iranians were “too needy.” The Syrian government wanted to extend support to a loyal Iranian ally, according to XXXXXXXXXXXX, but the dramatic display of multiple Iranian visits in a short period of time “was Iran’s doing.” The Syrian government, said XXXXXXXXXXXX, perceived a note of panic in the Iranian requests and some were saying Syria’s renewed relations with Saudi Arabia, its deepening ties to Turkey, and even Washington’s desire to re-engage Syria had made Iran “jealous.”
¶7. (S/NF) While the Syrian government responded positively to Iranian requests for public statements of support on the nuclear issue and against Israel, it remained silent after the Iranian Minister of Defense’s arrival statement denounced Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Israel and the United States. By the time Vahidi arrived on December 8, press contacts noted, the Syrian government’s attitude had shifted to “let’s get this over with,” according to XXXXXXXXXXXX. Indeed, at the same time Vahidi was parading his 20-car motorcade around Damascus, several other visits were occurring, including one by the Turkish military commandant and President Sarkozy’s Middle East advisors, Nicolas Gallet and Jean-David Levitte. Most of Presidential Media Advisor Bouthaina Shaaban’s December 10 press conference was dedicated not to Syrian-Iranian relations, but to Syria’s ties to other countries, according to press contactsXXXXXXXXXXXX.

¶8. (S/NF) Going beyond atmospherics XXXXXXXXXXXX reported several disagreements between Jalili’s delegation and their Syrian counterparts. On Iraq, Jalili reportedly proposed a “joining of Syrian and Iranian efforts” to influence the upcoming Iraqi elections. “They (the Iranians) basically asked us to focus on co-opting Shia politicians and to drop our support for the Sunnis and former Baathists,” arguing that the center of gravity in Iraq lies with the Shia. On this issue XXXXXXXXXXXX reported, Syrian officials expressed great reluctance and continued to insist on the reintegration of former Iraqi Baathists into the political system. Some Syrian officials XXXXXXXXXXXX agreed that Syria needed to extend the range of its political connections in the Iraqi Shia community, said XXXXXXXXXXXX. But Iran’s vision for Iraq was “a Shia-dominated state made of up of mini-states,” an outcome the Syrian government opposed, he said. The SARG continues to desire a stronger centralized power base in Baghdad.
¶9. (S/NF) On Yemen, Vahidi’s public remarks rebuking Saudi Arabia for interfering in its neighbor’s affairs drew sharp criticism from Syrian officials during the Iranian Defense Minister’s meetings XXXXXXXXXXXX Vahidi was clearly trying to drive a wedge between Damascus and Riyadh, but “it didn’t work,” he said. Asad stopped short of publicly contradicting the Iranian official during his visit, but he reassured Saudi King Abdullah’s son Abdul Azziz, in Syria to pay personal condolences after the death of President Asad’s brother Majd, that Syria fully supported Saudi Arabia’s efforts to defeat the Huthi separatists. “There weren’t any newspaper reports of Iranian ministers here (paying condolences),” noted XXXXXXXXXXXX.
¶10. (S/NF) More significantly, Syria reportedly resisted Iranian entreaties to commit to joining Iran if fighting broke out between Iran and Israel or Hizballah and Israel. XXXXXXXXXXXX said Iranian officials were in Syria “to round up allies” in anticipation of an Israeli military strike. “It (an Israeli strike on Iran) is not a matter of if, but when,” XXXXXXXXXXXX said, reporting what Syrian officials had heard from their Iranian counterparts. The Syrian response, he continued, was to tell the Iranians not to look to Syria, Hizballah or Hamas to “fight this battle.” “We told them Iran is strong enough on its own to develop a nuclear program and to fight Israel,” he said, adding, “we’re too weak.” The Iranians know Syria has condemned Israeli threats and would denounce Israeli military operations against Iran. “But they were displeased with Asad’s response. They needed to hear the truth,” XXXXXXXXXXXX said.
¶11. (S/NF) Asked what advice Syria was giving Iran, XXXXXXXXXXXX replied that Syria, along with Turkey and Qatar, was preparing for an Israeli-Iranian military exchange in the near future. “Military officials tell me they have noticed Israeli drones snooping around our sites,” he explained, noting some Syrian officials saw Israeli reconnaissance as an indication that Israel might seek to disable anti-air radar stations as part of a plan to fly bombers over Syrian territory en route to Iran. “We expect to wake up one morning soon and learn the Israeli strike took place. Then we expect an Iranian response. At that point, we, Turkey, and Qatar will spring into action to begin moderating a ceasefire and then a longer-term solution involving both countries’ nuclear programs. That’s the best scenario. All the others are bad for us and the region,” summed up XXXXXXXXXXXX. “We would hope the U.S. would recognize our diplomatic efforts to resolve a regional crisis and give us some credit for playing a positive role.”

Comment: So What?

¶12. (S/NF) Many Syrian and some diplomatic observers believe Syria is in the process of re-calibrating its relations with Iran and is seeking to avoid choices that would constrain the country’s flexibility as it faces an uncertain regional setting. Does, however, Syria’s instinct for self-survival and desire for less dependence on Iran represent anything other than a shift of emphasis as long as Damascus insists on maintaining its military relations with Iran, Hizballah, and Hamas? Some analysts here argue that Syria’s improved relations with Turkey, France, and Saudi Arabia afford Damascus a greater range of choices in dealing with the West, the Arab world, Israel, and Iran. This school asserts that better ties with the U.S. would further increase Syria’s range of options and its potential to move farther away from Iran. Even if Damascus and Tehran maintained some semblance of their political-military relationship, the extent of their ties would be constrained by Syria’s competing equities in deepening relations with others, including the U.S. Others argue that a wider range of options would only perpetuate Syria’s decision-averse orientation; if the Iranians can’t pin down Syria on matters of war and peace, then what chance would the United States have? Syria could pocket openings offered by Washington and simply use our gestures to play rivals off one another.
¶13. (S/NF) At the end of the day, it may be impossible to assess Syria’s intentions with any confidence until the regional context becomes clearer. In the meantime, the U.S. should take a modicum of quiet satisfaction that Syria is showing signs of wanting to moderate Iran’s influence in its affairs, even though expecting the relationship to end altogether remains unrealistic. If Syria’s improved relations with France, Saudi Arabia and Turkey can initiate cracks in the Syrian-Iranian axis, then perhaps discrete U.S.-Syrian cooperation could add further stress to these fault lines. A willingness to offer concrete deliverables as evidence of a U.S. desire for improved relations would force Syrian officials to calculate how far they would go in response, providing us with a more accurate measure of their intentions. At a minimum, increased Washington interest in Syria would increase Tehran’s anxiety level and perhaps compound Syrian-Iranian tensions, at a time when Syrian officials themselves may be unsure how they will react to unfolding events.

David Hornik me apunta al estupendo resumen de Jonathan Rosenblum sobre las necesidades de seguridad en Judea y Samaria, en lo fundamental basado en estos extraordinarios informes sobre las Necesidades de Seguridad Críticas de Israel para una Paz Viable. Todo en inglés.

En el resumen ejecutivo de los informes de DefensibleBorders.org, el Lt.Gen. (ret.) Moshe Yaalon destaca algo obvio:

"Pero si el proceso de paz no tiene arraigo en las bases de la sociedad carece de sentido y es inútil. Mientras en Ramala no deje de enseñarse a los niños de tres años a idealizar a los 'mártires' que se hacen explotar como bombas en su yihad contra israelíes y judíos solo habrá 'proceso de paz' en la imaginación de quienes quieran auto-engañarse."

Especialmente, se puede añadir, cuando esa sociedad vive un indiscutido auge del islamismo radical, en una curiosa mezcla de islamismo chií, de origen persa, representado por el Jizbolá, y de salafismo suní, en este caso de origen egipcio, representado por el Jamás, rama palestina de la poderosísima Hermandad de Musulmanes, en mi opinión la organización islámica y árabe con las estrategias y doctrinas social y política mejor diseñadas para el triunfo a largo plazo.

Islamismo que ni intenta encubrir su voluntad de acabar con judíos, cristianos y comunistas 'matándolos a todos, sin que quede ni uno."

Eso de sumar a los comunistas [quiere decir materialistas de izquierdas e increyentes de toda laya] tiene un estricto y coherente sentido desde la perspectiva religiosa islámica, pues el mismo es absolutamente incompatible con el Islam, pero no deja de provocarme cierta sonrisa sardónica cuando pienso en todos esos rojos que desde los '60 usan la causa palestina como uno de sus fundamentales banderines de enganche y de conflicto con sus adversarios políticos.

La Paz con Jamás es... imposible

Al igual que otros miles de sermones en el mundo entero, la oración difundida hace cinco días en la televisión Al Aksa de Jamás en Gaza deja claro las oportunidades de paz que realmente tenemos delante:

Oh Dios, nuestro Señor, elimina a Tus enemigos,

enemigos de la religión [el Islam]

en cualquier lugar.

Alá, golpea a los judíos y a sus simpatizantes,

a los cristianos y a quienes les apoyan,

a los comunistas y sus afiliados,

Alá, cuéntalos y mátalos, hasta el último de ellos, sin dejar ni uno."

No olvidad, como recuerda Michael J. Totten, que Jamás es hoy un gobierno, el Gobierno de Gaza, con sus propias fuerzas armadas, y atiborrado de recursos y reconocimiento de otros gobiernos, entre ellos el de España y el de la Unión Europea.

Tampoco olvidéis que Jamás es una rama de la Hermandad de Musulmanes, con diferencia el movimiento islámico más moderno e importante, a la que está vinculada públicamente según el artículo 2º de sus propios Estatutos, y que uno de los más importantes personajes teóricos de La Hermandad, gran predicador en al-Jazeera, es el Jeque Yusuf al-Qaradawi, que no se reprime de airear cosas así, y mucho más, en sus sermones televisados:

Un representante del gobernante AKP turco sugiere que Israel está detrás de las filtraciones que wikileaks va soltando:

"Israel puede haber ingeniado la filtración de cientos de miles documentos oficiales en WikiLeaks..."

El reportaje añade que:

"[a]utoridades de alto rango del gobierno [turco] creen que los cablegramas filtrados a través de wikileaks fueron elegidos como parte de un plan más amplio para arrinconar a Turquía tanto en términos de política internacional como doméstica."

Y ya puestos, cada día me parece más repugnante el Assange ese (PD Su perfil en el NYT por John Burns), el de wikileaks, al margen del mayor o menor interés de los cables filtrados.

Su pretenciosidad es degelace hasta decir basta, como ves en su web personal, a la que llama IQ, sin cortarse, oyes tú, para qué, y en la que él, el del coeficiente intelectual, es siempre me, me, me, como los niños: yo, yo, yo... y como dirección de email, pone una de Harvard alumni. El tipo es repugnante, sin más.

De paso, el daño que pueda causar al susodicho le hace plín, como si el mundo sale ardiendo, según ejemplifica Totten:

Iran is necessary.” Yemen’s president Ali Abdullah Saleh said he doesn’t care if smugglers import whiskey as long as it’s good whiskey. Unwillingly, Leo returned Susan to us

Sweet Sue exiled herself to Bklyn for ten days with good motive: catch up with handsome Leo, now speaking like crazy, even if no one can understand him yet, to his frustration, except Grandma Noo, so loves her to pieces.

She also had Thanksgiving with the Noonan bunch, including the Garcias, the Rothrocks, the Hoddinotts and the Ryans... Andreozzis were in Florida. She wasn't there to celebrate Thanksgiving for many years, so she was very happy... to be there, not to count the years that have gone under the bridge since last time.

Jessica was the hostess and provided great help to Joy's cooking in her magnificent kitchen: the turkey was fabulous, Susan says. Jack provided an apple-crumble pie I would have loved not to miss.

They all had a good time, sauf the turkey, of course: do you know why the bird turkey is named after the country saddling Europe and Asia? (here is the story)

Susan arrived back this morning, while Daniel reports Leo didn't have the best of nights, already missing Grandma's full and dedicated attention... to him, King Leo.

Now, survivors Willy, Sadie and Paco will enjoy again Susan's charming and loving manners and company... and walks, and food, and singing, and creativity and authoritative knowledge and, all those wonderful things she so gallantly wears.

She brought presents to the City and now brought us some other gifts. She also brought me a couple of heavy books (no room in the suitcase, she complained... on her way over she took a 5 kg of extra virgen olive oil for little Daniel, but a couple of paperbacks are too heavy...moms!).

Let me not be unpolite and thank her effort publicly appreciating the happiness she brought me.

My book traces the development of Qutb’s worldview from his village childhood up to his execution at the hands of Egypt’s ‘Abd al-Nasser regime. I pay attention to the gamut of influences—cultural, political, social and economic—that shaped his thoughts on the proper role of Islam in the state and society, and in the end propelled him in the direction of radicalism. The book attempts to understand the evolution of Qutb’s ideology in the myriad details of his life. It is a study of an individual and of his times; of objective circumstance and subjective experience, and of how each influenced the other.

But the book also has a critical purpose. In the wake of the 9/11 terrorist attacks, many scholars and journalists looked to Sayyid Qutb as a progenitor of Bin Laden’s and Ayman al-Zawahiri’s global jihad. Such an equation is not entirely correct. Although, like al-Qaeda, Qutb preached a total, uncompromising struggle of Islam against its conceptual opposite, Western secular civilization, he was not an advocate of indiscriminate violence.

Qutb would have condemned the violent actions perpetrated by the Egyptian jihadis of the 1970s and 1980s and by al-Qaeda and its regional affiliates today. He would not have understood al-Qaeda’s desire to attack a Western power, such as the United States. In Qutb’s mind, the jihad targeting “iniquitous” Muslim regimes was always paramount.

Ultimately, I want readers to understand objectively how and why this important Islamist thinker repackaged the rich resources of the Islamic heritage for purposes linked to social and political transformation. I aim to provide readers with a highly contextualized study that will allow them better to comprehend contemporary Islamist movements."

"Michael Young, opinion page editor at Beirut’s Daily Star newspaper and contributing editor at Reason magazine in the US, is one of the finest analysts of the modern Middle East working in English. He was born in Washington D.C. to a Lebanese mother and American father, and his mother took him to Beirut when he was still a child after his father died. He has lived there for most of his life ever since, even when the country came apart at the seams during the civil war between 1975 and 1990.

He has seen much more of the place than I have, of course, and he understands it and can explain it better than just about anyone. He also understands the region in general better than most because Lebanon is by far the best place to observe and study the Middle East. Tomb of the Patriarchs and Tomb of Rachel

The United Nations has once again reared its anti-semitic head.

The Executive Board of UNESCO has declared (see Decission below the flag) two of Judaism's holiest sites (Tomb of the Patriarchs and Tomb of Rachel) to be mosques and demand that Israel remove the sites from its National Heritage list.

In an effort to erase Jewish history and supersede Jewish religious sites with Islamic institutions, Muslims have intentionally built mosques upon numerous synagogues and Jewish holy sites.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office decried the ludicrous nature of the UNESCO decision:

“The attempt to detach the Nation of Israel from its heritage is absurd. If the nearly 4,000-year-old burial sites of the Patriarchs and Matriarchs of the Jewish Nation – Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Sarah, Rebecca, Rachel and Leah –are not part of its culture and tradition, then what is a national cultural site?”

In cooperating with efforts to erase Jewish historical ties to Israel, UNESCO is aiding and abetting those who hope to and obfuscate Israel’s Jewish past and undermine Israel’s Jewish future.

Conditions for an Israeli-Palestinian settlement are not here

Allow me to start with a citation of the Near Easterm emeritus scholar, always a clear and far-sighted analyst of the region, Bernard Lewis (from his book Faith and Power, 2010, OUP):

"From the international discourse in English and other European languages, it would seem that most of the Arab states and some members of the Palestinian leadership have resigned themselves to accepting Israel as a state. But the discourse in Arabic - in broadcasts, sermons, speeches, and school textbooks - is far less conciliatory, portraying Israel as an illegitimate invader that must be destroyed. If the conflict is about the size of Israel, then long and difficult negotiations can eventually resolve the problem. But if the conflict is about the existence of Israel, then serious negotiation is impossible. There is no compromise position between existence and nonexistence."

Since the book is a collection os previosuly published works, I would say that Mr. Lewis originally wrote those lines before Obama's Presidency and before the European bullying and menacing with the implementation of a Palestian State even without a prior agreement between Israel and the Palestinians.

A lesson muslims learned from day one is that you can agree on lesser terms when force is not in your side; it will only be a first step in your way to your real goal. That is why the Koran's first suras are far more amiable, accomodating and friendly than those corresponding to later years, when Muhamad had already won battles and was already feared.

It is also true that, lately, Western powers have not defended their allies when they required assistance (Kurds in Irak, Georgians in Russia, Maronites in Lebanon, Coreans in Asia, etc) to no one 's surprise, since they haven't defended themselves either, even when ferouciously attacked, at home (WTC in NYC 1993, 9/11, March 2004 in Spain, London, Muhamad cartoons, illegal and legal muslim inmigration all over, etc.) or outside (USA in Lebanon 1983 or Mogadischio 1993, Somalia pirates, persecution of christians in Morocco, Egypt, Pakistan, Iraq and..., etc.).

So Israel has no way out: it cannot trust those seating at the table, nor the enemies nor the mediators, nor the grantors. It can solely confide in the conditions negotiated themselves.

And the enemies are 'crecidos', that is, they see themselves winning, defeating the deprecated infidels, Christians or Jewish invaders. Why are they going to settle for less when they can have it all?

While they don't perceive that they might go backwards again and loose even more, they'll never concede anything. And this means that they will not renounce to the destruction of Israel, not for now, not in actual conditions, even if tactically they pretend otherwise.

And Europeans and Americans are not helping at all, on the contrary. If they really want to help they have to back Israel 200% and offer no concessions, or at least that is what he Arabs had to believe. Bullying Israel cannot lead anywhere useful... because the Arabs will want it all, including the anhilitaion of Israel... and Israel knows it.

Robert Aumann, Israeli Nobel Memorial Prize in Economics in 2005 for his work on conflict and cooperation through game-theory analysis, recently stated the obvious:

"... there can be no co-existence if one person isn’t willing to negotiate as hard as the other. The appeaser will always be swallowed up and simply cease to exist. It is stubbornness rather than the willingness to make immediate concessions that brings about successful negotiations. In other words, if you want peace, prepare for war."

I would like to see something different, but I am sorry to say it: Israeli concessions pushed by Americans and Europeans are the best way to impede any real negotiation... unless we are talk plainly about Israel nonexistence.

Philosophy of the Bible? Maybe Not Quite Yet

In a previous letter, I described some of the efforts I've been involved with over the last ten years to establish the academic legitimacy of the idea that the Hebrew Bible and classical rabbinic sources actually had an influence on the history of Western political thought. (“The Biblical Century,” May 10, 2010). Most people, I suspect, will find the proposition that the Bible had an influence on Western thought pretty uncontroversial. Most academics would probably agree as well. But this isn’t reflected in either the research that universities conduct or in the courses that are taught to students: The fact is that in most universities in America, Europe and Israel, the norm is still to conduct research and teach disciplines such as philosophy, political theory, and intellectual history as though the Hebrew Bible did not make a significant contribution to the ideas of the Western tradition.

There are a number of contributing factors here. But a central one is the fact that the Hebrew Bible is usually not studied for its ideas in the academic setting. If the Hebrew Scriptures have anything to say about metaphysics or theory of knowledge, ethics or political philosophy—until recently at least, the Bible programs didn’t really see it as their job to investigate these questions. Neither did the philosophy programs, since the Bible isn't supposed to be philosophy. (According to the old categories, the Bible isn’t reason, it’s revelation.) So in the end, it turned out that no one in the universities thought that their discipline was responsible for researching and teaching the Bible’s ideas.

So I was very pleased a couple of weeks ago when the John Templeton Foundation announced a $1.1 million grant to the Shalem Center to conduct a three-year international research program investigating the philosophical content of the Hebrew Bible, Talmud, and Midrash. As far as I know, this grant, which will support a series of annual conferences, workshops for students, and research fellowships, constitutes the first time a major foundation has sought to support research into the philosophical content of the classical Jewish sources. The grant to Shalem is also part of a larger project in “philosophical theology” in which two Christian institutions—the University of Notre Dame and the University of Innsbruck, Austria—will be conducting parallel investigations into the foundations of Christian philosophy. For those of us involved with this project, it's really pretty exciting. Don’t laugh (well, okay, go ahead), but it feels a little bit like trying to land a man on the moon. Of course the project could just fail, or end up being an embarrassment. There’s always that risk. But there’s also this sense that it could be the beginning of something spectacular.

Well, so here’s the first bit of embarrassment. I received word yesterday that one of the principal mailing lists announcing conferences and fellowship opportunities to philosophy professors around the world has declined to post the announcement for the first conference, entitled “Philosophical Investigation of the Hebrew Bible, Talmud and Midrash”.

The manager of the list wrote that “We have a list policy against theological/scriptural postings.”

The explanation? “They’re just broader than the list supports.”

It’s actually pretty funny that studying the philosophy of the Hebrew Bible is a project too broad for this particular listserv, considering that in recent months they’ve sent out calls for papers trying to enlist philosophy professors to write on topics such as “Philosophy and Baseball” and “Philosophy and Spiderman”. I don’t want to be interpreted as objecting to this kind of thing. Different universities will support different kinds of research. That’s just part of the open marketplace of ideas, right?

But on the other hand, it’s striking that for certain segments of academia, the philosophy of pornography isn’t too “broad” to be supported. Whereas the philosophy of the Bible—well nowthat’s risqué!

So if you know any philosophers (or philosophically inclined scholars in other disciplines) who might be interested in participating in a slightly risqué conference on the philosophy of the Hebrew Bible and Talmud, please forward them this link to our Philosophy of the Hebrew Bible Conference Announcement (see the announcment below).

Philosophical Investigation of the

Hebrew Scriptures, Talmud and Midrash

The Hebrew Bible occupies an anomalous position on the contemporary academic landscape. The field of biblical studies produces a steady stream of works on the compositional history, philology, and literary character of the biblical texts. But the ideas that find expression in the Hebrew Scriptures—the metaphysics, epistemology, ethics, and political philosophy of the biblical authors—have seldom been explored by the field of biblical studies in a systematic fashion. At the same time, philosophers, political theorists, and historians of ideas, who see the study of ideas as the principal interest of their work, tend to assume that the biblical texts fall outside the scope of their disciplines. The result is that despite general agreement that the Bible has had an unparalleled significance in the history of the West, its ideas have remained, until recently, largely beyond the reach of sustained academic investigation.

Much the same can be said about the other classical Jewish sources as well: The Talmud and Midrash seem frequently to explore subjects of intrinsic philosophical interest. Yet these texts remain all but unknown to philosophers, political theorists, and historians of ideas.

The ongoing neglect of the Hebrew Bible, Talmud, and Midrash by philosophers is especially striking given the rapidly growing interest in theological questions in philosophy departments throughout the English-speaking world. Over the last generation, Christian philosophers have labored successfully to introduce “philosophical theology” (or, more recently, “analytic theology”) into philosophy departments at leading universities. In keeping with longstanding Christian philosophical tradition, this discipline has focused on a priori argumentation concerning the concept of God as “perfect being,” and has usually been conducted with little reference to the Bible. As a consequence, philosophical theology has until now continued the larger pattern of academic neglect of the ideas of the Hebrew Scriptures and other Jewish sources. This has also meant that philosophical theology has been of only very limited relevance to Jews, whose tradition of philosophical and theological speculation is largely text-based.

This is unfortunate because philosophy as a discipline could contribute much to the elucidation of the Hebrew Scriptures and classical rabbinic texts. The law-oriented emphasis of much traditional rabbinic exegesis has meant that these texts have not usually been investigated using philosophical tools and with an eye for philosophical questions. So we can ask what do philosophical questions and the answers that have been given until now teach us about the Bible and Talmud? What, for example, does the nature of the mind or language, reality or morals, as understood by philosophers, have to offer us in enhancing or extending the insights from these traditional sources?

In Fall 2010, the Shalem Center in Jerusalem, with the generous support of the John Templeton Foundation, has launched an initiative aimed at developing a Jewish “philosophical theology” that will seek to advance the study of the ideas of the Hebrew Scriptures, the Talmud and Midrash in the academic setting. This initiative is part of a broader “Analytic Theology” project of the Templeton Foundation, which will also support Christian centers for philosophical theology at the University of Notre Dame and the University of Innsbruck, Austria. The Jewish component of the project envisions the development of a uniquely Jewish discipline that will use philosophical tools and methods for examining classical Jewish sources. The project is open to Jewish and non-Jewish scholars interested in the philosophical elucidation of the Hebrew Bible/Old Testament, Talmud and Midrash.

In the context of this project, the department of Philosophy, Political Theory and Religion (PPR) at the Shalem Center in Jerusalem invites submissions for an interdisciplinary conference on “Philosophical Investigation of the Hebrew Scriptures, Talmud and Midrash,” to be held in Jerusalem on June 26-30, 2011.

Invited speakers: Lenn Goodman, Jacob Howland, Joseph Isaac Lifshitz, Alan Mittleman.

This will be the first in a series of three annual conferences. For the 2011 conference, the organizing committee will give priority to papers exploring metaphysics and God’s nature. This topic is intended to address questions of what human beings can know about the fundamental nature of reality. Subjects for discussion will include the nature of reality and being, and the relationship of this reality with truth and with goodness. Particular attention will be paid to the question of what can be known about God, including questions of whether God can in fact be considered to be in some sense a being, his attributes, and his relationship to the world.

However, superior papers will be considered on all subjects relating to the philosophical investigation of the Hebrew Bible, Talmud, and Midrash.

Abstracts of no more than 1,000 words should be submitted together with a current cv by January 15, 2011.

El pesado anticomunista y el Islam

Hace ya un tiempo escribí El comunismo, más vivo que nunca, ataca a Israel con una flotilla y antes y después he escrito otras entradas insistiendo en la alianza estratégica de los islamistas, incluidos sus grupos terroristas, con los comunistas, incluidos sus grupos de terrorismo callejero (encubiertos hoy bajo infinitas capas, a menudo estampadas con ideas antisistema, para más güasa).

La alianza se regocija vilipendiando el capitalismo, el juedo-cristianismo y, muy centralmente, a Israel. La alianza no es sorprendente, aunque a bote pronto pudiera parecerlo: ni el islam es solo una religión ni el comunismo deja de ser otra.

Por hacer esa vinculación y, muy especialmente, por atreverme a usar la palabra "comunismo" (en lugar de los preferidos engañabobos de hoy: antisistema, antiglobalización, izquierdas, etc.) me han llamado rancio, claro. En la entrada citada al principio incluí numerosas postadatas para intentar defenderme de la peste rancia.

Call this latest manifestation of liberal illogic anti-anti-Islamism.

While there are a few on the American left, especially in the academy, who maintain that Islamism delivers a valuable critique of Western imperialism, or is a social movement defending the oppressed, this is a minority position. Anti-anti-Islamism is something else: a belief that American opponents of Islamism have cooked up a Muslim scare for their own political benefit, just as anti-Communists once concocted a Red scare!

'The most obvious similarity is that both originate in a denial of the threat,, says Norman Podhoretz, a veteran of both ideological conflicts. 'The anti-anti-Communists consistently accused the anti-Communists of exaggerating the Soviet threat from outside and the threat of subversion from within. Anti-anti-Islamists make the same accusations against those who take the Islamist threat seriously. Either we are part of an assault on civil liberties, which we are indifferent to, or we are eager to go to war.

´The anti-anti-Islamists are extremely parochial,' says Paul Berman, one of liberalism’s few outspoken opponents of Islamism."

En The Flight of the Intellectuals (2010), el citado Paul Berman examina la percepción del Islam que tienen los intelectaules occidentales, o su falta de percepción. En Terror and Liberalism (2004), su antecedente, ya sostenía que la guerra terrorista es en realidad fruto de la guerra entre la sociedad liberal y los enemigos de ésta. PD Llegando a fin de año por fin alguien vincula directa y públicamente comunismo e islam. Aunque tampoco en este caso se decide a señalar del todo y nombrar lo innombrable, tiene la virtud de acercarse mucho y unir progres y comunistas, como si alguna vez no hubieran sido lo mismo: Today’s ‘Progressives’: Repeating the Mistakes of Yesterday’s Communists, de Barry Rubin, en PajamasMedia. El artículo merece ser leído íntegramente; aquí un aperitivo:

"And what better remark on how Western apologists for Islamic and Arab nationalist tyranny function can there be than what Wolfe wrote in response to the report of a 1952 British mission about how wonderful life was in the USSR:

'Mr. Cadbury is slandering the Russian people by saying that they are “content” with the way in which they live. The hundreds of thousands that have died in purges [or been] … sent to concentration camps demonstrate that the Russian people are not the ignorant cattle that Mr. Cadbury suggests they are. So do the hundreds of thousands of … escapees testify to the fact that this people like any great people knows what freedom is and what slavery is.'

Al margen de detalles, destaca que tras el primer apartado que trata la Hermandad de Musulmanes el segundo es ya la 'far left'. No se atreve a llamrlos comunistas y acude al eufemismo de moda, pero no me cabe ninguna duda: son los mismos. Este es mapa incluido en el folleto que las Fuerzas Armadas de Israel (IDF) distribuyen a los israelíes para instruirles ante posibles ataques al país.

El mapa les indica el tiempo que, según donde se hallen, tienen para refugiarse cuando suenan las alarmas. Como podéis ver, los tiempos para alcanzar el refugio van de nada (immediately) a tres minutos.

El folleto tiene otras cosas útiles: cómo avituallar los refugios; cómo elegir la mejor habitación de una casa para refugiarse -en caso de estar en una casa de hace menos de 20 años, cuando los refugios antiaéreos se hicieron obligatorios- evitando áticos y cuartos alicatados, y cómo sellarlas en caso de ataques químicos o bacteriológicos con hojas de polietileno de al menos 100 micrones y cinta selladora de al menos 30 micrones de grosor y 50 mm de ancho; tener preparadas copias de documentos y bolsas de emergencia con ropa y dinero.

Como nos dice Israelinurse, los israelíes ya conocen el papelito, pero siempre hay nuevos inmigrantes a quienes viene bien.

Yo creo que debieran enviárselo también a todos los europeos.

En breve Susan nos escribirá la crónica del último y adelantado pavo, XVII edición (aunque según Maite solo es la XVI).

Adelantado porque la agenda de Susan está complicadísima.

Siguiendo la tradición, el tiempo no fue lo mejor, pero lo pasamos bien.

Vinieron algunos amigos que hacía tiempo no nos acompañaban y no vinieron otros; a algunos los echamos de menos.

El pavo insignia de este año (en la imagen) es obra del megatalentoso Sam López-Lin, joven muy particular en el que habitan extraordinarios mundos interiores y magníficas cualidades artísticas.

Si tenéis ocasión, pedidle que os enseñe los dibujos y tiras cómicas que ha creado directamente en su iPad con el mismo software (3$) que algún megafamoso dibujante useño, que se ha hecho unas chaquetas con bolsillos a medida para no pasear nunca sin su iPad.

Bueno, esperaremos a Susan para tener completa noticia de los acontecimientos vividos, desde la recogida del pájaro hasta la vuelta a Madrid.

Una breve nota para dar la bienvenida a un nuevo e interesantísimo partido político alemán: Die Freiheit.

"Un partido para más libertad y democracia", según reza su lema.

En el enlace que os he puesto tiene su programa completo, que afronta buen número de los problemas que nos acechan.

Tiene además la particularidad de que también sobre el Islam habla claro.

Tan claro que la presentación del partido tuvo que hacerse con las máximas cautelas, hasta el punto de que a los invitados solo se les dije el lugar de celebración poco antes de que comenzara la presentación; en el propio hotel donde se hizo se encubrió el asunto como una insignificante presentación empresarial, según nos cuenta Daniel Pipes, uno de los invitados internacionales que asistieron.

Su Programa Básico empieza sin tapujos ni miedos:

"La civilización Occidental, líder mundial durante siglos, se enfrenta a una crisis existencial."

Respecto del Islam, el Islamismo, la Ley Islámica y la Islamización, que ocupa un dos por ciento de su programa, habla cándidamente, empezando con clarividencia:

"El Islam no solo es una religión, también es una ideología política con su propio sistema legal."

El partido, además de rechazar la entrada de Turquía en la Unión Europea, solicita el escrutinio de los imanes, las mezquitas y las escuelas islámicas; el examen de las organizaciones islámicas para asegurarse de que se ajusta y cumplen las leyes alemanas.

También condena los esfuerzos para construir una estructura legal paralela basada en la sharía.

Su análisis concluye con determinación:

"Nos oponemos con toda nuestra fuerza a la islamización de nuestro país."

Die Freiheit apoya sólidamente a Israel, al que se refiere como

"el único etsado democrático del Oriente Medio. Y así es el puesto más avanzado del Mundo Occidental en el teatro árabe. Todos los países democráticos deben mostrar el máximo interés en que Israel viva con libre autodeterminación y seguridad. Nos comprometemos expresamente con el derecho de Israel a exisitir, sin discusión."

Naciones Unidas ha elegido Irán como miembro de la Comisión sobre Derechos de la Mujer de su Consejo Económico y Social.

Claro que va bien acompañado, entre otros por Congo, Liberia, Zimbabue, ...

No, no es cosa de Gila, es un hecho puro y duro.

Durante un tiempo Irán ha estado intentando que lo eligieran para el Consejo de Derechos Humanos, de lo que solo recientemente desistió.

A los pocos días, lo premian con lo de la mujer y de paso nos dan una patada en las entendederas a todos, para ponernos en nuestro sitio, para que no se nos olvide que no semos naiden, como dijo el clásico.

Luego algunos quieren ponernos a la ONU como ejemplo y suprema fuente de legitimidad y bondad.

¡Amos anda ya!

Como nos destaca la Fox, la noticia se haya bien enterrada en la nota de prensa a la que te he enlazado al comienzo, pero si te quieres ahorrar la búsqueda y te fías de mí, aquí te reproduzco el párrafo:

Hace ahora 12 años, un primer ministro israelí de derechas, el mismo que hoy vuelve a presidir su Gobierno, Binyamin Netanyahu, se plegó a un acorralado presidente useño de izquierdas, Bill Clinton, que le impuso las concesiones que listó en lo que se ha llamado el Wye Memorandum, por el marylander río homónimo.

No le valió de mucho, pues sus socios de derechas le abandonaron y las izquierdas aprovecharon para acabar echándole del gobierno.

Caroline Glick resume así la lección aprendida de esos hechos... y la que debió aprenderse. Son perfectamente aplicables a la cabeza de la derecha española, si es que hay:

¿Golfo Persa o Golfo Arábigo? La bomba dirá

Si tecleas Persian Gulf o Golfo Pérsico GoogleMaps te lleva exactamente al mismo sitio que si tecleas Arabic Gulf o Golfo Arábigo.

Aunque comparten golfo y son mayoritariamente musulmanes, a la derecha son chiíes y a la izquierda sunitas, aquéllos persas y estos árabes... y sus intereses son muy, muy diferentes.

Michael J. Totten entrevistó a Martin Kramer en septiembre de 2010 sobre la bomba iraní y, como era de esperar, MK nos sorprende a todos con un análisis agudísimo y diferente.

El entrevistador presenta así al entrevistado:

"I sought out Martin Kramer in Jerusalem because I knew he would give me an analysis well outside-the-box on Iran's nuclear weapons. He's a scholar, not a politician or pundit, and he doesn't conveniently fit into anyone's ideological box. I wasn't disappointed, and I don't think you will be either. What he has to say is different from anything you've read from anyone in the media, including me."

MK viene a sostener que el objetivo a largo plazo de Irán y su bomba nuclear es dominar el Golfo que ellos llaman Pérsico, y no el Levante, para, sobre todo, influir más intensamente en la disponibilidad del petróleo. esto es, en su precio, claro.

Es tan listo MK que más vale leer todo lo que tiene que decir, sin olvidar lo listo que es (aunque algo es seguro: su objetivo siempre es defender Israel). Una gota:

"And this creates a dynamic where if Iran also has nuclear weapons they will increasingly hedge. Things they allow Americans now—such as basing rights for operations in the Persian Gulf and beyond—will become more and more difficult to negotiate if Iran opposes them. So we would see an erosion of the American position in the Persian Gulf.

I think Iran is a lot less interested in justice for the Palestinians than in establishing their command over the gulf they call Persian.

En la misma línea, Daniel Pipes cita aquí a los personajes americanos que apoyan su "bomb Iran" idea: que Barack Obama puede servir al país (EEUU) y a su decaída presidencia si elimina las instalaciones nucleares iraníes.

Sobre el tema de la bomba, otro artículo, Academic head warns against airstrike on Iranian nukes (Yaakov Lappin, 16 Sep 2010), que presenta lo que Uriel Reichman, presidente del Interdisciplinary Center (IDC) Herzliya, dijo en la Tenth International Conference on Terrorism's Global Impact, organizada por el International Institute for Counter-Terrorism. Kramer lo ha calificado de provocador.

PD Siguiendo con el tema, Kramer se hace eco, el 19 nov en su facebook, del editorial del WaPo del día anterior que refiere la posición del Secretario de Defensa useño al respecto, y reitera la pregunta que se hacen en el Post, ¿por qué dice lo que dice el señor Secretario?:

WaPo editorial: "Obama's mantra about Iran has been that 'all options are on the table'—meaning he will not rule out military action to stop its attempt to acquire nuclear weapons... So why does Defense Secretary Gates keep undercutting the message? Twice in the past week, Gates has publicly argued against a military option—even though neither the US nor Israel appears to be close to launching a strike." Why?

Israel gana en la Universidad de Cambridge

El pasado 21 de octubre, defensores de Israel se enfrentaron en territorio hostil, el Club de Debate de la Universidad de Cambridge (su web), a opositores europeos defensores (es un decir) de los palestinos, encabezados por la cuñada de Tony Blair, Lauren Booth, convertida al Islam hace seis semanas en Qom (Irán).

El tema de debate lo dice todo: This House believes that Israel is a Rogue State

Al parecer el debate empezó según el guión previsto... pero ¿cómo terminó?

El 74% de los asistentes apoyaron a Israel y negaron que sea un Estado que no sigue las reglas.

Como ya dije hace un tiempo, creo que en Europa hemos alcanzado el punto de inflexión: ya no vale cualquier cosa contra Israel... aunque, claro, todavía habremos de aguantar los efectos de la inercia del pasado reciente.

Cuando escribo esto todavía no han subido el debate a archive.org (sitio cojonudo, por otro lado), que es donde los suele colocar el Club de Debate, según dicen, pero supongo que lo harán pronto por si lo quieres buscar ahí.

Anyone interested in the Middle East should read the Palestinian Karma Nabulsi's article (Diary, London Review of Books, Vol. 32 No. 20, pages 34-35, · 21 October 2010). Here is a peak:

"The way Palestinians see things, the fragmentation of the body politic – externally engineered, and increasingly internally driven – has now been achieved. This summer, even the liberal Israeli press began to notice that the key people in Ramallah, the Palestinian Authority’s capital in the West Bank, no longer discuss strategies of liberation but rather the huge business deals that prey on the public imagination. Every institution or overarching structure that once united Palestinians has now crumbled and been swept away. The gulf between Gaza and the West Bank, between Hamas and Fatah, between Palestinians inside Palestine and the millions of refugees outside it, between city and village, town and refugee camp, now seems unbridgeable. The elites are tiny and the numbers of the dispossessed and the disenfranchised increase every day. There is, at this moment, no single body able to claim legitimately to represent all Palestinians; no body able to set out a collective policy or national programme of liberation. There is no plan."

La Hermandad se une abiertamente a la yihad contra Occidente

La Hermandad de Musulmanes acaso sea hoy el grupo islámico e islamista más importante.

Están en misa y repicando: arriba y abajo, en despachos y en arrabales, en el pensamiento y en la acción, en casa y en la calle, en la acción social y en la acción guerrera; actúan abiertamente o en secreto, directa o vicariamente, en la oposición (incluso perseguidos) y en el gobierno.

Cuando les dejan participar en unas elecciones y ellos deciden hacerlo abiertamente, lo cuál no es tan frecuente, suelen arrasar. Que se lo digan a los argelinos, por ejemplo.

De ella han nacido los movimientos reivindicativos más modernos desde hace un siglo, o casi. Si no me creéis, investigadlo... veréis que llevo razón. Su web principal en inglés y en árabe: nada que ver la una con la otra, claro.

Pues bien, gracias a Barry Rubin me entero de que el recientemente elegido guía supremo de La Hermandad, Muhamed Badi', ha hecho suyos expresamente los postulados violentos de la yihad contra los EEUU.

En uno de sus recientes sermones, "Cómo enfrenta el Islam la Opresión y la Tiranía [contra los Musulmanes]", Muhamad Badi' acusa a los regímenes árabes de ser tiranos con sus gentes, de evitar la confrontación con los auténticos enemigos de los musulmanes -los sionistas y los EEUU- y de incumplir el mandato de Alá de lanzar la yihad contra los infieles.

Cuando bin Laden hizo lo mismo en 1996 nadie le hizo mucho caso, pero luego llegó el 11-S y todos nos enteramos.

Y al Qaida no tiene ni la fuerza ni los medios ni siquiera la voluntad que desde hace ya mucho acredita la Hermandad.

Y EEUU significa más que EEUU, claro. Así que esta noticia es importante. Y mucho.

Que lo digan en árabe no quiere decir que sea una tontería... todo lo contrario.

Carmelo Jordá lo titula, en LD, La guerra como destino turístico: The Ultimate Mission en Israel. Se trata de un viaje tuístico pecuiliar por Israel. Incluye:

"ocho días de dinámica e intensiva exploración de la lucha de Israel por la supervivencia y la seguridad",

una "exploración" que incluirá cosas que nos resultan poco menos que impensables dentro de un paquete turístico como encuentros con responsables del Mossad,

"tours" por unidades de las Fuerzas Armadas Israelís (IDF) que se encargan de matar a objetivos seleccionados de grupos terroristas, un juicio a miembros de Hamas en una corte militar, héroes de guerra, políticos...

¡Incluso reuniones con agentes infiltrados en las organizaciones terroristas!

Y encima solo cuesta 2.400€. Lo organizan los de Shuarat Hadin, organización cuyo fin principal es plantear pleitos por todo el mundo contra aquellos que financien o faciliten la financiación de organizaciones terroristas.

Como nos recuerda Ehud Manor, el 28 de septiembre de 1789, durante la Revolución francesa, Stanislas-Marie-Adélaïde, conde de Clermont-Tonnerre lo expuso con claridad, brevedad y precisión encomiables:

"No puede haber una nación en el seno de una nación."

En concreto lo dijo al tratar el acceso de los judíos a la ciudadanía francesa, pero lo hizo aplicando una idea general al caso concreto. Yo lo traigo aquí en relación con España y Cataluña.

La idea es formidable. y, en mi opinión, muy atinada.

Se asienta en diversos hechos entrelazados difíciles de refutar: las personas necesitamos actuar en grupo (por muchas razones y diversos objetivos), la gestión de grupos es dificilísima, los grupos tienden a la autodestrucción, los caballos de Troya suponen un riesgo máximo para la defensa común, etc.

El concepto es tan nítido que apenas requiere exégesis.

Por supuesto, no soy de los que creen que los 'nacionalistas' catalanes quieran una nación dentro de otra, pues no me cabe duda de que lo que quieren es una nación independiente de otra, y por lo tanto el concepto del conde francés carece de utilidad alguna frente a ellos.

Solo tiene utilidad, si la tiene, para intentar hacer reflexionar a los tontos útiles que siguen apostando por la traición incorporada en el Título VIII de la Constitución española, génesis del monstruo que hoy nos come y perjudica.

Casi dos siglos antes, el conde lo tuvo claro, y lo dijo, y por eso no tienen ni excusa ni perdón los gestantes de la Constitución de 1978, ni quienes la votamos: al reconocer nacionalidades dentro de la nación era imposible que la criatura creciera bondadosa, la monstruosidad era ineluctable.

La llegada de un Presidente que pensara que eso de la nación era algo discutido y discutible, además de cantada, solo ha sido la guinda del pavo.

Curiosidad sobre el azaque, uno de los cinco pilares del Islam

El azaque, o tributo-limosna, es uno de los cinco pilares del Islam, junto al testimonio de fé (shahada), la oración (salat), el ayuno (durante el Ramadán) y, quien pueda, la peregrinación a la Meca (hay).

El término árabe (زكاة) suele transliterarse al inglés como zakat, zakaat o zakah; creo que la primera forma es la más extendida en Occidente, incluso en España. En turco dicen zekât.

No obstante, en español se denomina azaque, desde antiguo. Así, el diccionario de la RAE dice:

azaque
(Del ár.hisp.*azzakí, este del ár.clás. zarāh, este del arameo zkū[tā] y este del hebr. zākāh, pureza).
1. m. Tributo que los muslimes están obligados a pagar de sus bienes y consagrar a Dios.

Lo que me ha llamado la atención es su etimología, que en última instancia nos lleva a la pureza del zakah hebreo.

Ya sé que el Islam se construye sobre el Cristianismo como éste lo hace sobre el Judaísmo, y que hebreo, arameo y árabe son lenguas semíticas muy próximas, pero no deja de ser una curiosidad que el término para designar uno de los pilares del Islam venga del hebreo.

Argumentar no vale de nada

Hace tiempo que estoy convencido de la inutilidad de intentar la argumentación frente al vilipendio sistemático de Israel entre los Occidentales 'educados'. Tampoco creo en la utilidad de los medios de comunicación para cambiar las ideas preconcebidas dominantes 'específicamente' sobre Israel.

Creo y he defendido públicamente que lo útil es atacar directamente el neocomunismo (hoy con nombres y apariencias muy heterogéneos) que impregna el pensamiento de aquéllos.

No se trata de Israel, sino del marco ideológico general en que se ubican y se sienten cómodos no pocos de esos occidentales. Solo cambiando aquél cambiarán estos su percepción sobre Israel... y una vez más, en ello apenas contará lo que Israel haga o deje de hacer.

Los nuevos progres occidentales se han asentado en un nuevo paradigma que pasa por rechazar nuestras maneras de hacer las cosas desde la comunidad y acogerse y abogar por el dominio de unos loados -increíble pero cierto- decisores 'internacionales' y, mejor, si son 'no gubernamentales'.

Hoy leo un artículo Daniel Pipes, Inmananuel Kant vs Israel, que, coincidiendo con lo anterior, cita a Yoram Harzony (de su artículo del pasado 14 de julio, Israel Through European Eyes, culto e interesantísimo, que puedes leer completo aquí), así:

"Responding to the vilification of Israel by offering corrective facts – about Israel's military morality or its medical breakthroughs – "won't have any real impact on the overall trajectory of Israel's standing among educated people in the West." Instead, the latest paradigm must be recognized and fought."

Claro que luchar contra los paradigmas no es fácil, pues a nadie le gusta reconocer sus bobadas, y es algo que solo se logra cuando el cambio se produce poco a poco, inadvertidamente... y casi siempre más por agotamiento del anterior que atractivo del nuevo.

No obstante, Harzony propone algo (no sé si útil, como no sea para irnos entreteniendo):

Siempre me han interesado los pueblos primitivos, las culturas en grave peligro de extinción.

Un impulso que, en el verano de 1994, me llevó a emprender mi primer viaje al Alto Orinoco, para visitar a los Yanomami, el mayor grupo indígena del planeta que vive, ajeno a nuestra civilización, a lo largo de la frontera, entre Venezuela y Brasil.

Entre la documentación sobre estos selvícolas, previa al viaje, me encontré con un libro excepcional: “Yo soy napeyoma”. En él, Helena Valero, cuenta su prodigiosa historia.

Raptada por los Yanomami, cuando tenía trece años, recorrió con ellos miles de kilómetros a pié, cruzó las más altas cumbres del Amazonas y fue entregada a varios hombres, de los que tuvo dos hijos. A pesar de todo, siempre la llamaban napeyoma, “la que no es yanomami”.

¿Si no eres de aquí, de donde vienes tú, mamá? – Me preguntaba Miramawë. Yo soy otra gente , hijo –le decía. – hace mucho tiempo que estos indios flecharon a mi papá y a mi mamá. A lo mejor ellos se han muerto. A mí también me flecharon … Y le contaba toda la historia.

Veinticuatro años después, logra escapar con sus hijos y busca a su familia original. La encontró. Pero ellos no vieron a su Elena, sino a la madre de un yanomami, a la mujer de un yanomami. No la podían aceptar, pertenecía al bosque. Aquí también era ya una Nape: La que no es.

En 1.971, el padre salesiano, Luis Cocco que tenía una misión con los yanomami del Ocamo me propuso trabajar con él. Acepté. ( ..) No es cierto que yo he vuelto a la selva, como han escrito por ahí algunos periódicos, porque ya no podía acostumbrarme a la civilización. Eso es una mentira grande. Sí en la selva hay cosas buenas: cacería, plátanos, fruta, miel…libertad. Pero y los flechazos, los golpes, los tigres, las culebras, las rayas, las hormigas 24, el waka moshi… No, nunca llegué acostumbrarme…

Y aquí fue donde la encontré, aquel verano del 94, en su casa de Ocamo, a orillas del Orinoco, ya ciega y pobre.

He vuelto a la selva, si, porque no hay sitio para mi en la ciudad. Me quedo contenta al lado de los indios, quiero enseñarles como pueden ser felices acá mismo y que en nuestra civilización no podrían estar mejor.

Le conté mi deseo de encontrarme con los grupos más aislados y convivir con aquellos que no conocían otro mundo más que el suyo y sonrió levemente.

Y es que, en el fondo, viajar, convivir con otros y fotografiarles es para mi un único acto. Poder abandonarme completamente a la emoción de descubrir en ellos ese misterio que no se ve a primera vista y que la fotografía me permite tratar de desentrañar. Y lo intento mostrando, no tanto su vida cotidiana como su identidad profunda, a través del retrato, por encima de su apariencia pintoresca.

A pesar de que Porawë es un buen cazador, hoy también regresa al shabono con las manos vacías. Se avergüenza, pero su entrada debe ser altiva, digna, solemne.

Detrás de los conflictos suele haber mal de ojo, celos o lo que es peor, el secuestro de una mujer por un grupo rival. Por eso, las buenas relaciones con los vecinos, las alianzas e intercambio de regalos son fundamentales. Si esto falla, estalla la guerra.

Kasiewë era un gran cazador. No había secretos para él en este mundo, ni en los otros. Sabía engañar al ronsoco, la hora en la que se posa el paruri, grande como un pavo, y los rincones favoritos del urogallo. Sabía que hacer, para que el jabalí no te huela y como esperar al armadillo, al tapir y al caimán.

Pero sabía, sobre todo, manejar el arco. Sus flechas daban en el blanco a la primera.

El niño llevaba varios días sólo en su chinchorro, debía estar enfermo. Porque aquí, cuando alguien enferma, le dan su medicina y le dejan solo. Así, esperan tranquilamente a que eche su mal.

El güanepe es como el cordón umbilical, por el que el niño sigue conectado a su madre, hasta que echa a andar. Consiste en una especie de faja en bandolera, hecha con la corteza del okoma, que la madre soba, hasta lograr la máxima suavidad.Konopama exhibe orgullosa su posición de primera dama. Es la mujer del jefe Hiriwë, el gran cazador. Los cráneos de sus piezas logradas lucen como trofeos. Sabe que no le faltará de nada.

Un hogar tras otro forma el círculo del shabono. En medio de la inmensidad oscura de la selva, la gran plaza central se abre a la luz del sol y las estrellas. En ella, los niños juegan despreocupados y seguros y sus padres, trazan el espacio sagrado, para las ceremonias

Desde que entré en su territorio, encontré el mismo tipo de gente que en nuestra sociedad; sentí que compartíamos la misma humanidad. En el shabono, como invitado que era, siempre me trataron con respeto, como a un viejo amigo que regresa al cabo del tiempo.

Como escribió el antropólogo francés Jacques Lizot: Los Yanomami son guerreros; pueden ser brutales y crueles, pero también pueden ser delicados, sensibles, y amorosos. Pese a su condición de selvícolas, son esencialmente como cualquiera de nosotros. Les fotografié tranquilamente, sin forzar nada, adaptándome a sus ritmos, con paciencia, la misma que tuvieron conmigo.

Éxito no tan inesperado de la Concentración madrileña en recuerdo de Guilad Shalit

A las 12 de la mañana, con el cielo cubierto y temperatura muy agradable, por inciativa espontánea de Juan José y Sami (?) (gracias), a quienes no conocía, nos reunimos en Madrid un montón de amigos de Israel para acompañar desde aquí a la familia Shalit cuando se cumplen 4 años y tres días del secuestro de su hijo Guilad por los terroristas de Hamás.

Eramos muchos más de los que la corriente dominante en los medios podría hacernos pensar. Unos se conocían, pero la mayoría no nos conocíamos. No sabíamos que somos muchos más de los que el discurso dominante nos quiere hacer creer.

La reunión, no autorizada y quizás por ello muy amistosa y poco administrativa, fue agradable y fraternal.

En unas fotos de Guilad (en las salía muy guapo), con banderas de España e Israel y un gran corazón, mandamos mensajes de cariño y empatía a sus padres que, sobreponiéndose al dolor, hace ya cuatro años emprendieron una marcha desde el norte de Israel hacia Jerusalén para exigir la liberación de su hijo.

Nuestros carteles evocaban los 1.463 días de cautiverio de Guilad Shalit. Pero, en realidad, no son cuatro años de cautiverio sino de tortura y terror.

Tortura de Guilad Shalit. Tortura de su familia. Terror de las personas libres, pero especialmente de los judíos de todo el mundo.

Son cuatro años de terror para un hombre y de sufrimiento cruel para una familia.

También de rabia y repulsión, las que sentimos los hombres y mujeres libres amigos de Israel, defensores de su derecho a exisitir, defensores de su carácter esencial en la vida y la cultura de Occidente, la cultura de nuestros padres, nuestra cultura y la cultura que deseamos para nuestros hijos.

Y, al menos algunos de nosotros, defensores de un Israel fuerte, de una España fuerte y de una alianza fuerte entre Israel y España.

Y todo ocasionado por un grupo terorista, Hamás, comprometido con la destrucción de Israel y la imposición del islam en el mundo por medio del terror... con la impagable complacencia, cuando no la complicidad, de no pocos gobiernos occidentales, que parecen empeñados en acabar con nuestra libertad, nuestra cultura y nuestra forma de vida, empecinados en sucidarse y, de paso, arrastrarnos con ellos.

Hoy, viernes 25 de junio se cumplen cuatro años del secuestro del soldado israelí Guilad Shalit por parte del grupo terrorista palestino Hamás. En su captura murieron dos de sus compañeros; el teniente Hannan Barak y el sargento Pavel Slotzker.

En sus cuatro años de secuestro, Hamás ha impedido que la Cruz Roja visite al soldado, del que se desconoce el estado de salud o las condiciones de su cautiverio.

Yo iré a la concentración para trasladar solidaridad a su familia y para manifestar mi repulsa hacia los criminales secuestradores que le mantienen cautivo como rehén y mi compromiso para luchar para que paguen su crimen.

Islam: instrument of war, not an aggressor

Bush's 'war on terrorism' has been translated often as 'war on islam,' because terrorists are islamists, for the most part and worldwide.

I am not counting capitalists, USA or Israel as terrorists because I don't think we are, but I know communists (aka as leftists... or under many other names) accuse us of being major ones. Islamists too, only they would also identify us as sinners (and that will also include well-meant liberals, of course)

Somehow, Islam is often portrayed as the aggressor warrior (some islamists might argue their war is defensive, but that is not what I want to talk about in this post).

Of course, it is easy to realize that an idea or religion, although an extremely powerful instrument as it can be, can not be a subject aggressor... but we tend to take the easiest path, so we equal instrument with actor.

And that is dangerous. Very dangerous.

Let's accept that religion can be a potent inductor of conducts and even that some religions are prone to aggression and, even more, that countries with strong islamic dominance are today's font of terrorism... it is still very dangerous to confuse instruments (islam) with actors (people in power).

It is dangerous because it misleads us.

War (today in the form of terrorism) is always launched by people with power in search of a bigger power. They often cover their ambitions with religious justifications (and islam offers plenty of handles for that purpose) but if we want to understand what is at stake, key to winning the war, we have to keep focused on the actors and their ambitions, because they are our threat and our target.

Of course, if they use religion as an arm we have to learn how to neutralize it and how to overcome it... but above all we have to keep our full attention on the aggressors and their ambitions.

This is a political issue not a religious one.

For many years during the XX century, Western peoples (prime time audiences, in today's slang) were not even aware that there were countries and peoples in the Midle East, even less that they once dominated the 'world.'

We began to have a hint when petrol for our cars doubled in price and we were told that it was because of the Arabs. Arafat and the Munich Olympics' massacre of Jews did their part in the path of awareness. Yes, the Jews in Israel battled against those people, but since they always won (more or less) we lived through it without paying any attention.

They didn't have anything attractive to offer us (petrol was delivered to us by Texaco, Shell or Gulf), no Elvis, no movies, no TVs, no Chevrolets, so we didn't pay attention nor cared.

And the evil role was very well played by Russia and a few minor accolytes.

If we were interested in exoticism, we turned our heads to the Far East where Japan was starting to produce amazing stuff, China cheap stuff; Vietnam immigrants and...

But what did the Middle East have to offer us? Niente, niente.

Now we talk a lot about them. We are very much aware of them. Terrorism has such an effect.

But, hell, we don't even have time to learn the history of our own country, how the heck do you want us to learn anything about those complicated people?

It was hard enough trying to distinguish between a jap and a chink, and now you want us to know about suffies, shias, sunnis, assassins, syrians, turks, mamelucks, armenians, kurds, niqabs, burkas, suras, hadiths, agk, ihh, jihad, emirs, sultans, caliphs, imams.............? Ugggggghhhhhhhh!!!!

And you are right. We are not going to learn any of that. But people in charge should not be confused.

In those countries live people in power with ambitions as big and far-fetched as in ours, and those people are the aggressors, not the ideas they cover up with.

And in those countries live people that realize that if they want a better life for their people they might need to confront neighbors and other entities worldwide to impose what better suits their needs and their wills... and they might fight for that... with all the instruments at hand, including religion, of course.

But it is the people and their needs and ambitions we have to look at if we want to win the war. And the war should be fought, I think.

Without forgetting that even if they all look alike to us, they might be very different one from the other (of course they are!) ... the closer ties they have the more probable is that they are irreconcilable enemies.

So, let's not mix Turks and Persians...

Yeah, I know, why the heck did I waste my time writing such a bunch of simplistic givens?

The answer my friend is blowing on your TV... or maybe I didn't have anything better to play with.

On July, 3rd, 2010, two weeks after I posted this entry, Muhammad Daoud Oudeh, aka Abu Daoud, the mastermind of the PLO's massacre of eleven Israeli athletes during the 1972 Munich Olympics that I mentioned above, died. Today's Palestinian Authority Chairman, the so-called 'moderate' (it's amazing what people are ready to beleive!) Mahmoud Abbas, touted him as, "a wonderful brother, companion, tough and stubborn, relentless fighter," and described him as "one of the prominent leaders of the Fatah movement," as cited by Caroline Glick from the London-based and Abbas-controlled Al-Hayat al Jadida newspaper (here the original news in Al-Hayat, in arabic, of course).

Once again, it was Martin Kramer who gave me the lead to Caroline Glick's excellent article Weathering the approaching storm (click in the title to read it in full). I'll get back to it later.

She must be well known, but it was my first contact with her. It won't be the last one. I was so interested that I had to check her about-me. This is how it starts:

"I grew up in Chicago's ultra-liberal, anti-American and anti-Israel stronghold of Hyde Park. Hyde Park's newest famous resident is Barack Obama. He fits right into a neighborhood I couldn't wait to leave." (emphasis added)

There is a lot to say about the whole paragraph from my Spaniard and personal point of view and situation, but I'll do it, if I do, some other time.

Her article forecasts political and diplomatic strategic scenarios for Israel, both in the short and medium terms (she says long term... which only means she might be young enough), derived from the recent flotilla-guerrilla's feint.

All of it is very interesting. By the way, from day one, the whole flotilla's feint reminded me of the mid 70s Moroccan Green March onto the Spanish Sahara, except, I hope, that Israel is not as weak and uncommitted as Spain was then.

First, she states the obvious:

"Recent statements by the leaders of Iran, Turkey, Syria, Hamas and Hizbullah make clear that the members of the Iranian axis view the Mavi Marmara episode as a strategic victory in their ongoing campaign against Israel. The international stampede against Israel at the UN, the White House and throughout Europe exposed Israel's Achilles heel. The Mavi Marmara demonstrated that on the one hand the IDF cannot enforce its blockade of Gaza without the use of force. On the other hands it taught Israel's enemies that by forcing Israel to use force, Iran, Turkey and their allies incited a UN-EU-US lynch mob against Israel." (emphasis added)

She rightly asserts the well known and long-lived value of martyrdom, both for internal and foreign purposes:

"The Mavi Marmara showed Iran and its allies hat they can win strategic victories against Israel by giving the IDF no option other than using force against them. This means that Israel can bank on the prospect that all the ships they are dispatching will be populated by suicide protesters. Indeed the Iranians have openly admitted this. Mohammad Ali Nouraee is one of the regime officials involved in dispatching the Iranian ships to the Gaza coast. In an interview this week with Iran's official IRNA news agency Nouraee said that the passengers aboard the ships, "are willing to become martyred in this way."

The Lebanese ships are being organized by Hizbullah-affiliated individuals and the Turkish ships are being organized by the IHH terror group that organized the Mavi Marmara. Hizbullah's penchant for dispatching suicide squads is of course well known. And the IHH showed its devotion to suicide protests on the Mavi Marmara. So it is fairly clear that the passengers aboard the ships from both countries intend to force the IDF to kill them."

If something works and can be easily replicated we tend to exploit it to the maximum, so she clearly foresees what is coming:

Israel can and should expect mobs of suicide protesters marching on Gaza to force Israel to surrender control over its borders. Israel can expect mobs of suicide protesters marching on Israeli embassies and other government installations around the world in an attempt to increase its diplomatic isolations.

In the air, Israel can expect charter flights to take off from airports around the world with a few dozen kamikaze protesters who will force the IAF to shoot them down as they approach Israeli airspace.

Iran and its allies have found a weak chink in Israel's armor. They will use it any way they can.

(...) The Iranian ships are already en route, and the ships from Lebanon could appear at any moment. The mass demonstrations against Israel throughout the world and the threatened violence from the Hamas-supporting Israeli Arab leadership indicate that mobs of suicide protesters could appear anywhere with no prior warning."

Then Caroline goes to what she says is the bigger problem that outcomes from all of this (I am not sure to fully share her view, in fact, I don't, but she might be right): war or, in fact, wars... of a new kind. That's what she says:

"THE SECOND and far more dangerous implication of Israel's enemies' aggressive adoption of suicide protests is that by ensuring violence will be used, they increase the chances of war. Indeed, Iran and its allies clearly believe that suicide protests are a vehicle for initiating a full-scale war against Israel on what they view as favorable footing. According to Bahrain's al Wasat press service, Hussain Amir, Iran's ambassador to Bahrain threatened this week that, "If the [Zionist] entity dares to direct any aggressive attack [against the Iranian ships] then it is certain that [Israel] will be met by a much stronger and firm blow."

Syrian President Bashar Assad told the BBC Wednesday that the region is moving towards war. And the Turkish government is continuing to escalate its assaults on Israel. On Thursday Turkey threatened to cut off diplomatic relations with Israel if Israel does not issue a formal apology for its takeover of the Mavi Marmara and pay restitution to the families of the terrorists killed on board the ship.

Obviously the most disturbing aspect of the war threats is the specter of Turkish naval vessels attacking the Israeli navy. If Turkey - a NATO member -- participates in a war against Israel, the repercussions for Israel's relations with NATO member states, including the US, as well as the EU are liable to be unprecedented. "

She also dares to say what is needed (easier said than done):

"Israel needs to quickly develop tactics and strategies for contending with this."

"IN THE days and weeks to come, Israel's political and military leaders must move resolutely to prepare to withstand these new threats that arisen in the aftermath of the Mavi Marmara episode. To meet the expected deluge of suicide protesters on sea, land and air, Israel must immediately acquire non-lethal means to disperse these protests. This involves purchasing and producing tear gas, water cannons, rubber bullets and other non-lethal weaponry. These non-lethal weapons must be rapidly distributed to IDF units deployed along the frontier with Gaza and to the Navy. They must also be supplied to Israeli security teams tasked with protecting government installations worldwide. Forces must undergo intense and immediate training in crowd control and mob dispersal to be ready to meet what is clearly on the way.
Diplomatically, Israel needs to hold its new line on the Gaza blockade. Netanyahu's buckling to US-EU-UN pressure has encouraged them to redouble their assault on Israel. The new line must be held at all costs. Otherwise, Israel will have no diplomatic line of defense as the approaching threats become reality.
Strategically, our leaders need to consider what our aims will be in the coming war. For instance, as far as Turkey is concerned, Israel's aim will be to end the war as quickly as possible. Here the tools of diplomacy with NATO members and public diplomacy with the American people will be crucial to convincing Turkey to stand down. They must be aggressively and energetically utilized without delay.
From a military perspective, evasion is preferable to confrontation. This understanding must guide naval operations towards Turkish forces.
As for Iran, Israel's aim must be to prolong the war as long as necessary to secure its strategic objective of denying Iran nuclear weapons. Moreover, it is important to use both kinetic and non-kinetic means to change the relative power balance between the Iranian people and the Iranian regime. While in all likelihood today the Iranian opposition green movement is unable to overthrow the regime, if Iran initiates a war against Israel, Israel must use the opportunity the war affords to change that balance of power.
Once Israel's political and military leaders determine the strategic goals of a regional war, they must move swiftly to outfit and train the IDF to fight it. This war will certainly be different from its predecessors and Israel's strategic goals - and the clear strategic and tactical preferences of its enemies - dictate the training that the IDF must initiate immediately. "

In this line of thought, I'll dare to put out a suggestion, not necessary meant to be a course of action but food for thought. Israel could address the international community (specially, NATO community) saying:

"We would like you to help us to stop the next flotillas-guerrillas before they reach the blockade zone in the appropriate manner you consider fit.

We will cooperate with you in that purpose with everything you require, as we sincerely don't want to have to sink those boats and the martyrs they bring onboard."

The point is, if trying to do the minimum damage when obliged to do what is needed has brought (and will probably bring) and uproar of protests, put the ball in the uproareres' camp. (PS Today, Sunday morning, I read the following: Next Flotilla will be stoped: Israel tells the UN Lebanese flotilla will not be allowed into Gaza; as I said, I believe it would be wise to complement said declaration with a push to NATO allies to do their part... or shut their mouths.)

And one more thing on my part: Israel should also look carefully at what is happening both in the US and the EU, and other places around the world... but not from an Israeli point of view, not looking at how it can affect Israeli interests, but looking at the problems, threats and fears the peoples of those countries face in their daily lives. And the sooner Israel starts identifying Islam, Hamas, Hizbollah and so on with Communism and Communism with the actual problems affecting the people worldwide, the better. Avoid using expressions as left, antiglobalization, liberals or the kind, as they don't bear the pejorative taint required. And yes, I know, communism looks incompatible with islam... but common interests make allies, even if temporarily, as we all know.

Now, reaching what I really wanted to emphasize from the beginning (I didn't do a good job of synthesis, I know, but as I said at the beginning, the whole article is so interesting), Caroline Glick points to the heart:

"The longer term lesson of the Mavi Marmara incident, and the threats that emerged in its wake is that war is too serious a subject to leave to generals. The IDF and the Defense Ministry clearly misunderstood the nature of the threat posed by the Turkish-Hamas flotilla. Indeed, recent reports that until the Mavi Marmara Israel wasn't even collecting intelligence on Turkey despite its obvious, multiyear transformation from ally to enemy underlines the fact that the IDF is woefully incapable of assessing, understanding and preparing for the threats Israel faces."

And, once again, she is brave enough to suggest a course of action:

"In light of the IDF's failure to understand Turkey's transformation from ally to enemy in a timely manner, its incompetent planning for the takeover and its problematic performance in both Operation Cast Lead and the Second Lebanon War, Netanyahu must create an external body empowered to assess and dictate the means for preparing for emerging threats. This body can either be a new department in the Prime Minister's Bureau or the National Security Council can be empowered to perform this function. While this is not the most urgent matter on the national agenda, the establishment of such a body should be a central mission of the government."

She is probably right, but we all know that if Israel was prepared to produce such a capable body now, the body would already exist, because the capable people call to integrate it would had foreseen what was coming and would have had the will and the power to maneuver for it to be in place by now... and we shall never forget the old saying: if you don't want to solve it, form a committee. Maybe what she is proposing, as she does, is to bring new capabilities and power into the NSC.

But she is right, public awareness and globalization (where we people worldwide tend to have an opinion -a very strong and, ususally, way far-fetched opinion-, and an 'easy solution' for everything, even when the problem is happening somewhere we can not put in the map or involve people and histories we know nothing about) has change so many things that it is very probable that the IDF are not prepared to handle the new scenario by themselves, without help and further training.

Any how, just in case she is absolutely right, the formation of the proposed body should already be in its way... although I am not sure that, in the end, it should be empowered. Empowerment should only come if everything looks right, after a very careful and skeptical, if swift, evaluation of the formation and preliminary works (work in practice) of said body.

Yes, I know, work in practice is not work and could itself arise added problems, from selection of members to integration with the general organization and other existing bodies and society in general... but I'll rather take that path.

But then again, she might be right and action can't wait for all that trying and evaluating. as she warns us:

"Time is of the essence. No, Israel does not want another Goldstone kangaroo court. But right now, kangaroo courts are not our biggest problem."

I hope Caroline doesn't get angry with me for almost reproducing her article and tearing it apart. My first intention was only to cite a couple of her ideas... but as I have repeated, it was so interesting.

Now a relief... a relief that shows some other modern war games and tactics.

Que lo de la flotilla y el bloqueo es una mera excusa para avanzar intereses internos y ajenos al bienestar de los palestinos de Gaza es una obviedad.

Nadie protesta cuando es Hamás la que se niega a recibir los bienes de la flotilla, como nos cuenta, entre otros muchos, Hanan Greenberg. ¿Para qué?

Y menos aún cuando es Hamás la que sojuzga, asedia y ultraja a su gente. ¿Para qué? Nos lo cuenta el periodista palestino Jaled Abou Toameh:

"Ever since it seized control over the Gaza Strip in the summer of 2007, Hamas has imposed a reign of terror on the local population in general and its critics in particular. Hamas has brought nothing to the Palestinians in the Gaza Strip other than death and disaster.

En Occidente se movilizan con la flotilla por las mismas razones que lo hacen en Turquía: por razones de política interna, fundamentalmente para extender el comunismo frente al capitalismo, unos, y para extender el islamismo y minar a los oponentes, los otros; en ningún caso para interesarse por el bien de lo gazatíes.

¿A qué juega El Turco?

Desde luego no es fácil elucidar el juego de Turquía ni las consecuencias de lo que se traiga entre manos.

Tony Badran, en NOW Lebanon, sostiene que es un movimiento suní para contrapesar el patronazgo iraní chiíta (a Hamás y Hizbolá) en la zona y, lógicamente, un movimiento turco para subir en el escalafón de los suníes importantes.

Y sí, claro, puede serlo, como también puede ser un movimiento demagógico de Erdogan y su AKP para aprovecharse de lo bien que responde su audiencia (interna y también externa) al dramatismo populista y, con ello, lograr objetivos cercanos, en clave interna, como también dice Badran.

Y puede ser un movimiento de despecho o de atención ante las reiteradas (y justificadas) largas recibidas de la UE: como no me quieres me voy con el otro o mira que me voy con aquél.

Y puede ser una ambición imperial neotómana: ¿porqué Erdogan y su cónclave no van a aspirar a resucitar glorias pasadas e incluso superarlas? ¿acaso searía algo novedoso que un político piense y actúe así?

Incluso puede ser un movimiento concertado con Israel, que los caballos de Troya han resultado frecuentemente útiles.

Y un movimiento pactado con USA, que la presión interpuesta por tercero es finta tradicional.

Y puede ser un poco de todo. Incluso nada de lo dicho, sino todo lo contrario.

Lo que está claro es que le prestaremos más atención, pues ha dado un paso adelante, que puede ser amenazador, y en Occidente hace mucho tiempo que no atendemos a razones sino a miedos: si quieres que alguien te haga caso, tócale los cojones y compórtate como un gamberro, cuando no como un hijo de puta... intentaremos comprenderte y darte lo que quieras.

Sin que sirva de precedente, El País publica hoy una tribuna de Bernard-Henry Lévy con el título de este post en la que éste dice:

"Nadie muere de hambre en Gaza, Israel solo bloquea la entrada de armas. Pero unos tontos útiles se embarcaron en una epopeya miserable, cayendo en la trampa de los fanáticos del apocalipsis antijudío."

Eytan Levy, uno de los israelíes participantes en el Primer Encuentro Energías Renovables y Cleantech Hispano-Israelí, ha resultado herido como consecuencia de la agresión sufrida esta mañana a manos de presuntos “pacifistas”.

El hecho tuvo lugar cuando Eytan se dirigía al encuentro escoltado por la policía.

Un grupo de unos doscientos manifestantes violentos lanzaron su ataque cuando llegaba al acto que se celebra en el Parque Científico de Madrid en la Universidad Autónoma de Madrid.

Inflexión

"[h]istory is not a straight line."

Pocas obviedades me han impactado tanto en la vida como esa frase de Martin Kramer, que hace ya tiempo leí en una entrevista que le hacen con ocasión de presentar el Shalem College (ya me gustaría estar cualificado para estudiar ahí; ya me gustaría que en España hubiera una iniciativa parecida), del que le habían designado Presidente.

El contexto en el que pronuncia esa frase es:

Kramer paused and unfolded a handwritten quotation that he’d copied from an interview given by former prime minister Ehud Olmert to Haaretz and read it to me: “If the day comes when the two-state solution collapses and we face a South African-style struggle for equal voting rights [among Palestinians in Judea and Samaria], then, as soon as that happens, the State of Israel is finished.”
Kramer appeared quietly incensed. He said, “I thought to myself, well, certainly the early Zionist leaders knew that there was a tremendous demographic disadvantage. They were very much tilting against reality on the ground, and yet they didn’t despair. Because they knew something, I think, through their reading of history that perhaps this particular leader didn’t know. That history is not a straight line.”

Efectivamente, la historia no es una línea recta. Y aunque hay grandes estudiosos de los comportamientos humanos, lo cierto es que la historia hace frecuentes tirabuzones, como también los hacen las tendencias y modas dominantes, sin que sepamos muy bien por qué: no se producen al azar, claro, pero no acabamos de entenderlos ni manejarlos.

Creo que el reciente evento de la flotilla ha puesto de manifiesto uno de esos giros históricos en la percepción que de Israel se tiene en Occidente. De hecho intuyo que ese giro forma parte de otro mayor: el de la percepción que Occidente tiene de sí mismo, de su ubicación en el mundo.

Sin embargo, no creo que se haya hecho patente, al menos yo no he leído nada al respecto.

Vayamos por pasos.

La flotilla ha generado tal disparte de declaraciones y manifestaciones, fundamentalmente periodísticas pero también políticas, denigrando la actuación israelí que era ineludible que se produjera un rechazo de excesos tan desatinados y desproporcionados.

No obstante, todos los que defendemos o nos interesamos por las causasa israelí, sionista o judía nos hemos sentido obligados a difundir mil y un datos y obviedades (destacadamente videos, declaraciones, hechos, etc.) para poner en su justo sitio el desafuero mediático desatado.

Pero lo cierto es que en Occidente, aunque nos dejamos engañar constantemente, a menudo interesadamente, hace tiempo que estamos al cabo de la calle de las acciones generadas solo para llevarnos al agua, como a los gatos.

Y, en este caso, las intenciones de la flotilla eran evidentes desde su origen.

Y hace tiempo que los comunistas (o antisistema o antiglobalización, elija usted) llevan tocándonos las narices asignándose la condición de pepito grillo de la conciencia occidental, atribuyéndose en exclusiva la bondad humana y, claro, cargándonos a los demás con el correlativo yang de la maldad... eso sí, viviendo a costa del trabajo de malvados.

El juego les funciona, pues que siempre hay algún motivo para la mala conciencia... a menudo con razón.

Los comunistas antisitema siempre han usado sus soflamas anti Israel como seguro banderín de enganche, con la justificación de defender los derechos de los oprimidos por tan mala gente. Les ha funcionado bien, muy bien.

Pero cuando han pasado a actuar como colaboradores activos de los islamistas, subiendo varios escalones de golpe, participando activamente en sus acciones, nos han hecho conscientes a los Occidentales no solo de lo que debe llevar Israel sufriendo tanto tiempo en soledad (acaso con la compañía menor de los 'americanos' y los 'capitalistas') sino de la basura que esa gente viene irrazonablemente haciéndonos tragar, por los pecados y desafueros contra la humanidad pasados y presentes supuestamente cometidos por nuestros antepasados y por nosotros, e incluso por los futuros que cometerán nuestros hijos.

Creo que ha sido la gota de exceso que ha colmado el vaso... y que nos hemos dado cuenta, por más que los medios y políticos vayan a tardar un tiempo en darse cuenta de que el viento ha rolado.

De hecho, pasado el maremágnum inicial, parece que casi nadie hace el menor caso de los excesos declarativos 'de los sufridos pacifistas' retornados a sus países, tras su liberación y después de pasar por Turquía para celebrar su 'victoria.' En España, parece que les han recibido sus mamás y sus papás y, claro, los 'intrépidos periodistas', que no tenían otro remedio, pero que seguro que conocen el percal mejor que nadie... y, claro, los 'intrépidos periodistas', que tan 'profesional y correctamente' nos exponen la miseria humana... con el mejor de los ánimos y las más elevadas intenciones, claro.

PD Siempre he pensado que el no hacer aprecio de ciertas cosas era la mejor manera de quitarles relevancia, de despreciarlas, pero la portada del 5 de junio de El Mundo, sumada a la portada del día de la flotilla, han colmado mi paciencia. Hace tiempo que me viene desagradando mucho y a menudo mi periódico. Pero ahora han colmado mi paciencia definitivamente. Adiós Mundo. Como no he encontrado el enlace a esa portada en su versión electrónica, os remito a un artículo de Luis F. Quintero en LD, a quien también le ha llamado la atención la deriva de lo de Pedro J.

No fue un crimen

Es tan breve y adecuado, que reproduzco (seguro que no le molesta) el siguiente artículo de Salvador Sostres, publicado en los Blogs del Elmundo.es el 2 de junio de 2010:

"No fue un ataque, fue una defensa. No era una misión humanitaria, era propaganda. No fue un crimen, fue un incIdente. No era la 'Flotilla de la Libertad', era un panfleto de Hamas. Israel no tiene que ser proporcional a la hora de defenderse, tiene que ganar. Israel no tiene que caer simpática, tiene que sobrevivir. No eran aguas internacionales, eran aguas bajo una jurisdicción especial en las que Israel tiene derecho a defenderse.

No fue un crimen ocasional, es una guerra que hace muchos años que dura. El bloqueo no es antihumanitario, es antiterrorista. El incidente no es lo que buscaban los israelíes, es lo que buscaban los supuestos cooperantes. No iban desarmados, llevaban machetes, barras de hierro y pistolas. Las muertes han sido un horror para Israel, y un trofeo para un mundo árabe que hace apología de los árabes. Los israelíes construyen refugios y los árabes escudos humanos. No fue un crimen, fue un acto de defensa más entre tantos otros actos y tantos otros siglos de vivir defendiéndose. No son unos bestias, los bestias son los otros. Son el pueblo de la libertad."
